anybody know tokens?

I found this token at a house yard here in bedford,indiana ,, one side has NO 28 stamped on it, and the other side says exspires 1883, anyone know what it is?

Can't tell what it is but nice find. At least you know it's 125 years old or older.

Most likely a wage token. People got them for labor, usually over a day or week. When the work was done, then the token was redeemed. That kept people on the job until it was done.
It's also been holed, to wear around the neck. Probably much later in it's life.

Could be a miners tag....if it wasn't returned at the end of his shift, meant that he could still be in the mine, and a search team would go look for him.
