Anybody relic hunting with an Xterra 70?

I still have my XT-70 and am back to relic hunting this year. While I usually use my Tejon, I'd like to use my XT-70 for it too. What setup do ya'll use for relic hunting with an Xterra?

like all other hunts ... all metal ...

The X-Terra 705 is my choice for relic hunting. The 705 equipped with the 10.5 DD 7.5 kHz coil is a very effective relic machine. TomB

10.5 DD coils, All metal 2 tone, tracking on,,,,,,works great for me, as always!!!!!!..........MO

I'm no expert on the 705, but i think in prospecting mode you would be looking for gold and the 18.75 khz coil is what you would want to use. I'm not sure the 18.75 khz coil would be the best coil for relic hunting. I prefer the 7.5 khz in 10.5" DD.

I use both 10.5DD Coils, the only thing I see between the two, is the 18.75 is a little better on brass. Depth for me is the same.

morelic the reason I bring up relic hunting in prospecting mode with any coil is I thought it would be more sensitive?

I've tried it a couple of times and unless you want to dig everything, I would not do it.

I use a 70. With the nine inch 18 kHz coil I have dug bullets at 13 inches. That coil likes the lead. The 10.5 7.5 kHz goes deep on most everything. I use two tones, tracking on and dig all high tones.

I always use prospecting mode when relic hunting. It seems to be more sensitive and lets you find the real deep stuff. If I'm not in prospecting mode, I use all metal and have been slowly getting used to the 99 tones. I usually hunt in 4 tone, though. I love the 705. I've found some cool stuff with it.

I have the x70 , I mainly go out looking for coins. When one goes for relic hunting only does that person dig all good target signals? Tell me how your hunting methods are.

I've always thought of my XT-70 as more of a coin machine, but more and more I'm realizing it's the best lightweight relic hunting machine I have, especially around here where the ground conditions can be real variable within just a few feet. My old MXT was real good because of the ground tracking, but that machine tore up my shoulder. I've always preferred manual ground balance machines for tones, but now I wondering how much I've walked over because of faulty gb.

When initially trying to locate a relic area (such as a homesite or Civil War campsite) I look for an area that has a concentration of nails. I determine that by going over the area and looking for small, individual iron signals and I dig up a few to confirm. Once I'm satisfied that I'm over the desired area I slow way down and start trying to find the high signals that are repeatable in both directions and then dig them up. If it's a big iron signal that appears to be deep, I'll dig those up too. If I'm not getting many non-iron signals and the iron is pretty dense I'll flag out a small square and remove everything I can get a signal on. This will sometimes start to reveal the masked targets underneath. If I'm getting a lot of interesting targets on the first trip to the site, I'll wait until successive trips later to start the remove-it-all treatment.
