Anyone find something similar to this.

I found this with an SE and the 6" excellerator coil last week. I was running factory settings and this came in while the detector was nulling in the smartfind mode. It wasn't all that deep, just mixed in with a bunch of trash. I'm assuming the 48 stands for the year the "license" was issued. Anyone know the history of these things.

Cool find! I did some research and the 48 may also stand for Highway 48. I found this definition and picture on wikipedia.com:

"New Mexico State Highway 48 is a state highway that runs north-south through the Sacramento Mountains, which are part of the Lincoln National Forest in Lincoln County, New Mexico in the United States. Its southern terminus is at U.S. Route 70 in the town of Ruidoso, New Mexico. Its northern terminus is at U.S. Route 380 in the town of Capitan, New Mexico. Total highway length is approximately 25 miles. New Mexico State Highway 37 intersects this highway several miles north of Ruidoso, New Mexico."

Since I found it 35 miles from that hiway. Although, there's nothing much along that route except open road.

...and found this item being advertised as "New Mexico 1953 licensed chauffeur badge # 17383".

so maybe the "48" is the year of issue. hope this helps!

Yes, it has to stand for the date; it was just coincidence about highway 48, my mistake.

Great find Dan!

I have found several from my State......at one time and not long ago either most States required Chauffer licensed truck drivers to wear the Chauffer Badge while driving. The Series of numbers was the State registration number for that driver within the State of issue..The 48 on yours was most likely the year of issue for that Chauffers License. On my State it also had the numbers, and year issued stamped on the badge

Chauffer's badges do have a following with collectors. I've found a few from different states and each one is a neat and unique find in it's own right. If I had the time and space, I could easily get into collecting them myself! Take care and HH, Mike.

I have found 2 Chauffeur Badges myself but from Minnesota. There interesting items so you should be very happy you found one. Good Luck and HH.
