anyone got any tricks how to read sqaure nails?

As much as I love my gamma 6000 which has been doing a great job I still dig a lot of nails showing good repeatable signals but I have noticed most of the time though the #'s are all over the place and sometimes one sided signals ...but just when you think you got a good find once in a while swinging from all angles showing 50's up through sometimes getting a 99 on the display hoping for some big silver I guess also using the round 8" concentric coil too just looking for any tips to avoid them if possible.......though I did save them to maybe experiment with later wonder maybe if a sharp shooter coil would help?

I don't think I have ever had a detector that didn't do that. Especially on those dang square dudes. Sounds like your machine is doing a great job trying to tell you what it is. With a little practice you will be able to sort those nails from good signals.

I would totally agree with Dave,on my T2 if the signal 'bounces' as i call it from say 50-90 and is not solid then its almost certainly iron,if its also below 40 it also stays in the ground,if its a steady TID and its above 40 it has too come out,but the 'bounce' is pretty reliable at what its telling you,only run my T2 in 2 tone,although sometimes i do use single tone which is slightly deeper.Only draw back with the T2 is sometimes it would be nice to have the facility to use Concentric coils but alas this machine was not designed with those in mind.

Try these ideas-

My favorite is to take my shovel and drive it into to ground once around the target to disturb the soil. If the target response disappears, i move to next target. In my mind, breaking up an iron halo is what happens here.

Try slowly lifting the coil while sweeping. If target is lost very quick from normal coil detecting height, its probably iron. A coin for example fades as you lift the coil, not suddenly disappear

Lastly, some of us old timers call it 'burning' the target . Its a procedure used when a target sounds great in all directions. You take the coil and move it as fast as you can in tiny sweeps over the target. If its a good target, it should stay the same, sounding good in all directions. If its a bad target, it usualy breaks up audibly as you check the target from all directions.

Hey Tony thank you very much i'll try that the next time I'm out with it ......my next outing will be with the snake NEL coil in in some infected places truly I really like this Gamma the last one I had 4 years ago seemed to have a lot more emi issues and for some odd reason deep silver would register 40 on the display
