Anyone have a leaking MX Sport :veryangry:

Sven

Well-known member
One of the guys up here in Canada bought one and is not a happy camper.
So owners may want to take note:

"Has anyone else taken their mx sport into the water yet? I did this morning and now the control box is full of water, not a happy camper. The control box barely breached the surface when I was in the detecting... Really sucks hopefully I don't have any trouble with dealer/whites taking it back. Now me without a detector for the rest of the summer...
I think this little circular sticker on the back is the culprit. Quite a bit of water has run out from around the edges. Does anyone else's unit have one of these stickers on the back?"

I've had mine in the ocean surf 4 times with no trouble at all. The detector was even returned to Whites for the firmware update after being in the ocean. No problem at all with leaking.
That looks more like a plastic cover than a sticker on my detector. I have not had any problem with water leaking from that spot or anywhere else. I'm sure Whites will warranty the machine.

Sven, thats very bad news too hear, just confirms that my rule of waiting 12 months after a new machine has been launched to see if any glitches occur,i certainly wont be buying a MX Sport, the AT Pro will be my chosen machine for river detecting.

Did the detector quit working properly? That button on the back is designed to let water run out. Now if it stopped working that is a different problem. I have had mine in both salt water and fresh water many times. Yes you will see water run out of that button on the back but does not affect its operation. There are quite a few around here using it in fresh water and none have had problems with water infiltration. Was pretty happy with its performance on wet salt sand but did have to lower the sensitivity way down to keep from overloading submersed in salt water. In fresh water it is a great machine. I am not nervous about build quality on the MX Sport. So did it really leak or did he just see water coming from the button shown in his photo?

Looks like White's is going to have some problems with waterproofing as Garrett did with the AT Pro.

"Yes there is water inside the screen that you can see sloshing around. When I went to use it again before I noticed the water, it wouldn't turn on. I remembered the batteries were low when I put it away. So I inserted new fresh batteries and it went crazy. That's why I noticed the screen was slightly fogged up. And I couldn't power it off so I pulled the batteries and then I really noticed all the water inside the screen. I turned it over and saw water dripping out of that button... Now it needs repairs or replacement IMHO."

I have had mine in the water many times, I have let it sink to the bottom while standing neck deep in water trying to recover a target. No leaks for me.

We try to make sure every detector that leaves the factory is 100%. Sad to hear that this Canadian's MX Sport leaked. I do my best to keep an eye on forums and social media for things like this and engineering is always improving current products to make them as good as they can be.

We've had a handful of leakers, but do a detailed autopsy on anything that comes back DOA so we can identify and fix the problem. The sticker isn't a seal, it's just to keep prying screwdrivers out of the "private parts" of the machine. White's will always honor its warranty, so if you have a problem with your machine we will make things right. Which usually means a new (better) detector. The rough part is that things like this don't show up until you have 1000's of detectors on the market since the failure rate is so low. Thanks again for your patience, but it sounds like most of you are doing alright with your MX Sport.

Hi - Do you refund shipping costs to those international purchasers that have to send their units back to have these faults addressed?

The reason I ask is that I have seen one user send two units back and is now having issues with their 3rd one - They are in the US, but can only imagine that exercise costing one hell of a lot of money for people to keep shipping the MXS to the USA -

Thank you

We have an office in Inverness, so thankfully they can do repair work there. I've heard of two people who have had multi-MXS issues, and take it as my personal responsibility to make sure this doesn't happen to people. I would be hopping mad if it were me!

That is very strange, If you are having troubles finding more, I can help, feel free to contact me and I will provide you with a list, Whites have identified the main issues and are working on the resolve, So any time now the fine details will be done.
