anyone here use any of the smaller coils?

wondering if maybe I'd have better luck at trashy sites like fairgrounds if I were using a smaller coil. What ones are people using here? I talked to my minelab dealer and he is also a sun ray dealer, and he feels the minelab 8" DD is better than the x-8, but he also said the 6 x 8 is a great coil too..........gimme some opinions

I've had good success with the 8x6 SEF. Probably my main coil for most 'pounded and trampled' places. But it's the only small coil I have, so I can't really provide a comparison.

6X8 SEF is the best 8" with the Sunray X-8 a close second.. The Sunray X-5 is the best in the 5-6" size class.. If I could only have one coil of any size, it would be the 6x8.... wildherre

I have the 6-inch Excelerator, the 6X8 Butterfly and the elliptical Joey. The 6-inch is the most sensitive, but lacks the depth of the other two. (+/- 15% less) The solid bottom Joey doesn't snag up in weeds and cornstalks like the Butterfly might. But I find myself using the open design Butterfly most of the time, where separation is important. Easier to see a blade of grass or pebble, for location comparisons. Depth and sensitivity wise, those two are about the same for me. JMHO HH Randy

I've been useing a Minelab 8" for years its very good in the trash.Whatever you get make sure you get another lower rod so changing back and fourth is smooth.

I just received my Sunray X-5 last week and took it to a trashy lot that I have been working...All I can say is WOW! I was able to pluck a 56 Washington quarter and a 06 Barber dime plus a handful of clad out of the same area that i had just hit the day before with the Pro coil. The X-5 was able to quickly lock on to the coins despite the heavy concentration of trash. The coil also provided great depth despite the miserably dry ground. This is the first after market coil Ive used with the etrac so I don't really have anything to compare it to. Nonetheless I was very impressed with it.

I used the Sunray X-5 and I also used the Excellerator 4.5 X 7

I liked the X-5 much better than the 4.5 x 7 as I felt that it had better depth.

Just my 2 cents

Terry I have the X5 X8 and 6X8SEF. These are the only coils I use now even though I have 3 more I might use periodically. I like the 6X8 SEF a lot. However when I put the X8 on it does just as good as the 6X8 if you ask me. When you go from the 6X8 to the X8 it is like you put a feather on the end of the machine. I don't know the difference right off hand but it is noticeable a lot to me. The X5 is a superb coil too and it is a new machine with it on the end of the stick. However it is a very slow go with the X5 ground coverage wise. That being the case you will find more targets if you ask me just from that advantage. I have found that with the X5 the machine will go ahead and run wide open per the amount of dirt it sees via the shorter detection strip. No guessing or trying to get the signal to repeat like a bigger coil seeing more dirt and targets. If I had just one coil and only one coil to run and that was it. I'd choose the Sunray X8 and the X5 next. The X 8 is excellent and you are like me. Most all your coins no matter what coil you are no more than 6-7 inches deep max. With that being said I dug a wheatie yesterday afternoon right at 10 inches with the X8. I used the bigger coils for a while but still dug the same depth coins. No brainer X8. Plus if you have any problem, Ralph of Sunray is right here on the forum. I got mine 135.00 shipped, with lower rod, right here used, just for asking for one.

Waited 40 days to get SEF 6X8 from Kellyco was really getting ticked off but it was worth the wait.Hunted trash park under old Oak trees due to heat.Hunted about 4 times total of 7 hours area that I hunted with stock 11 inch coil.I am hunting high only digging targets 30 and above until better weather comes in conductive.found about 80 coins only 2 silver merc and canadian dime almost all the pennies are wheats target seperation is about 1 inch even at high disc.deepest coin was 3/4 lenth of Garret pinpointer.
