My son just returned from Iraq. The problem with Skype was that it relied on a web connection and where he was even a 56K connection was expensive. It does work and is far cheaper than using regular phones. Give him some phone cards for backups and for that occasional long talk that skype might no do for as it will drop out randomly at times...
