Anyone know what this coin is ?I found this coin detecting a old house in MA. the area dates back to the late 1600's. It's copper , It's the size of a Quarter,.and has no marking's on the back of the coin. I never saw a coin like it . I'll post other finds tomorrow after I clean them up.
Thanks for looking

Neat find! My guess is that it's a counterstamped US half cent. Merchants would put their initials or names onto coins as a means of advertising. In the text, "Merchant And Privately Countermarked Coins" by Gregory Brunk (2003), the CT in a serrated rectangle counterstamp is known in the following half cents: 1794, 1803, 1804, 1805, 1807, 1808, 1809, 1828 and 1829. It is also known on a Canadian token. You may want to take a close look at your coin to see if you can find a date. There's a picture in this book of the counterstamp and it looks exactly like yours. Counterstamped half cents are a lot scarcer than counterstamped large cents. I guess the merchants liked the "big pennies" better since they gave them more room to put their mark. You may want to research US silversmith marks to see if you can id the CT on your piece. Very neat and scarce find that is chock full of history!
