They're about the size of a golf ball.

we were picking... just from the side of the rural roads where the brances over hung from private property. We would bring bags full home with us.

The nut is rather small and you need one of those nut prongs ( ?proper name) to pic out the "meat" from the shell.

Nice photo...thanks for sharing.

I believe that when i was a kid i learnned that only a squirrel knows EXACTLY when a hickory nut is perfectly ripe. The only time i've ever eaten them was one time i found a stash in my pillow case at my cabin.
SERIOUSLY DELICIOUS !!!!
I spose i'll keep an eye on these and try to see when my flyin squirrels start to collect 'em. Or ,mmmmmmm, i can jist wait till they stash 'em in my attic this fall and go collect 'em then.

The sweet and the OTHER kind. They are SO bitter and sour, they'll make your eyes water, and they both look alike. In your area of Pa.,there are thousands of the trees. The real prize nut to find is the BUTTERNUT.Most of the trees in that area have been cut for furniture wood.WHAT A SHAME !!! Bob (former resident of that area):usan:
