I live about 75 miles southwest of St. Louis in a rural area. There is lots of historic places near me including C.W. battlefields etc.A few years ago I got to know an elderly farmer who owns land where several old homes once stood. He also told me that his farm was once a large hog farm operation. The owner at that time (aprox. 1895) obtained a contract with the city of St. Louis to take train loads of garbage and dump it at the farm. The garbage was spread on the fields (aprox 200 acres) and was used to fatten the hogs. When the hogs were fat they were shipped back to St. Louis on the same trains and sold to slaughter houses. The farmer made money on both ends. The operation continued until about 1920.It has been a dream come true for me.The farm is located in a very rural area and I am one of the few who know its history and exact location. As far as I know I am the only person to ever detect it.I have found (and am still finding) hundreds of coins, relics, and whatzits over the years at this site. Most of the coins are dated between 1880 and 1920 with the newest coin found being 1920.I have enough whatzits to keep you busy for a while, but I will go slow on posting them so as to not "wear out my welcome" here! Thanks for hosting this great site!
