Anyone see American Digger on Spike last night?

Knowing Bob I figured it would be a class show. He's very interested in the preservation of relics and history. Unfortunately it wasn't. I guess to get an audience you have to make a show that's a cross between American Pickers and Storage Wars. I'm afraid that Ric Savage can't pull it off though. He was more irritating than anything. Instead of being colorful he was loud and obnoxious. And with the show stating that it's about making money from relic sales really hurts our hobby. Just my opinion though.

Content-wise, I felt it was a disaster. It made "Diggers" look like Sesame Street.

I thought the premier show was March 21st? Just checked the Spike TV website and it said the same thing ...

I refuse to watch this sewage. I want the ratings to be low, so I can't bring myself to watch it.

Same here. :ranting:

The more successful these shows are the WORSE the effect it's going to have on our hobby. I'm actually encouraged by the backlash that I have seen on the detecting sites and in the non detecting media! The faster these shows fail or are pulled the less attention will be paid to our hobby, and when you're into treasure hunting the less attention the better!

Agreed. Most people in my area don't even know what a metal detector is. I like it that way.

I've watched a few shows of "Diggers" and this is the worst show I've seen. I was hoping it was going to be better but no luck. I can't get into the "juice" and "roundness" used to a sickening leveling the show. I can't even believe this made it to tv.

Aside from the jargon and silliness, I've watched and re-watched 2 shows of Diggers and I liked them. I haven't caught American Digger yet though. My feeling on these shows is this:

The archies don't care whether we sell or keep finds-they want to own IT ALL. Period. The 'general public' I talk with always wants to know how much money I get from my finds...so that notion is already out there!! Time to quit hiding and stand up for our rights. You cannot/will not be able to please the anti's! They are against anything but themselves, and currently the detecting community is WAY too meek about our activities. If you don't get out there and fight, you'll lose your right. Not because some TV show depicts people selling finds. Everybody needs to wake up-THAT PERCEPTION IS AND HAS BEEN OUT THERE SINCE THE NOTION OF FINDING TREASURE WAS INSTILLED IN US AS CHILDREN.

I believe selling finds can be a good thing. It gets stuff into circulation. Along the same lines, donating to a museum is commendable and certainly 'preserves history'. Just don't think that because you would never sell a find, or you're interested in only the history, that the anti's will leave you alone.

These shows are completely ridiculous and are no good for our hobby! All we need is a bunch of inexperience newbie idiots thinking they can get rich with a $30.00 detector. All that is going to do is give the other side more ammo. Also I don't like how the shows make it seem like all you find is good items in a short period of time. Where's all the trash that ALL detectorist or treasure hunters dig? And I think they are a little off on there pricing wouldn't you say. THESE SHOWS ARE UNTRUTHFULL, MISLEADING, AND TOTALLY IGNORANT!!! of course this is just my 2cents.

I have not seen the show but my detecting buddy has reiterated what the majority of our detecting community has been saying....I do not agree with the archies in terms of NOT allowing us to pursue our beloved hobby, and do not think for a minute that they are not guilty of keeping some items for themselves...Preserving history is very important, but how many minie balls, buttons, coins, rings, etc...must one protect, and what can we learn from these artifacts that we have not already learned. Secondly, how many of each are required to be protected before we "the public" actually have the right to hunt--our pursuit of happiness.

We all know that the mindset is to protect sites for future generations....However, many of the sites have already been destroyed by subdivisions, shopping malls, golf-courses, etc..., that we will never know the extent of what has been lost. OR, perhaps we already do if it is 1 of the 500+ civil war camps that, for the most part, will not provide a level of enlightenment beyond what has already been uncovered....True, there are campsites that have yet to be discovered, and it will more than likely be one of us who will carry the cost of researching, traveling, and hunting the site that would perhaps never be found--we have our place both good and bad in historical discovery.

Having said that, my biggest fear is having a bunch of money hungry novice detectorists (if you want to call them that) trespassing on private land causing landowners to post their land, making it off-limits to those of us who hunt honorably and with integrity...I have seen this happen before in Natchitoches, LA....Try to go there and gain access where looters have torn down fences or churned up the land with their 4-wheel drive vehicles leaving open holes and trash everywhere--I have experienced the devastation first hand!

I have no problem with metal detecting being aired on television if it is done with the purpose of educating the public, showing the rewards as well as the patience and research needed, along with the fruitless hunts...Showing individuals how to respect the rights of the property owners, respecting the artifact that may hold historical significance, leave an area as if it has never been disturbed, and document the findings--this is all apart of the fun, and it would also be viewed much more favorably with the archies--I know, I have good friends who praise and respect my efforts toward recovery and documenting finds that would have never seen the light of day had it been left for future generations or due to a lack of funding...I worked with archies in identifying indian mounds, and provided federal site forms on these mounds for the Gilmer County Historic Landmark Commission in Gilmer, WV--Personally, I would never sell a piece of history for financial gain. My love for history offers itself well to the hobby, and it helps that I have a MA in History, but that's just me...to each his/her own as long as it doesn't ruin it for the rest of us--funny how greed tends to do that very thing.

I am very concerned about these shows. They are not reality. They are phony and staged. Much like Storage Wars, you never see the actual monetary transaction or profit, only the mention that an item is "worth" so much. Frankly they are not worth anything without a willing buyer. The preview for American Diggers is absolutely stupid. If you are not familiar with it check out my recent post at http://www.stoutstandards.com/Latest.html

Unfortunately, as long as people watch these stupid shows they will keep on coming.....

Ric Savage is a first-class flipping idiot !!!! And I hope this show crashes hard .... it makes us all look like morons !

Terrible show,,,Really makes us look bad and like Pawn Stars,,,Like it is all about finding and quick money,,,I dont watch anymore at all,,,,

just watched a preview of american digger. this rick savage idiot has spent his life in flash.someone thinks there's money to be made.
haven't seen any show with wrestlers in them that i'd watch.

HH

Just as bad last night as the first. Gonna be hard to get permission to detect after people see Savage getting doors slammed in his face right and left.

I thought Savage was so over the top that it was funny. I did enjoy seeing the stuff that they found, but that was about it. They, of course, are trying to appeal to the general public to get their viewership. If it was just us detecting guys/girls watching the show, it would not last to long.

the moment i watched this show i felt like reaching through the tv and smacking them with my digger they make us all look like idiots and this show makes me sick when i saw how they destroy land and use shovels and picks and destroyed a water pipe in the ground and all they did was tape it and cover it with dirt and using:ranting::ranting: backhoes to dig gives people that dont know about this hobby a bad taste in there mouth. so much for going and knocking on doors to detect i hope this show fails big time

Does'nt it give you a warm, fuzzy feeling inside knowing that a handful of detectorists are selling out at the expense of our hobby ? Whether it fails or not, the damage has been done ..
