Anyone still using F70? What are your thoughts on it?

Yes...my sentiments have not changed regarding the F70...its perfect for what I use it for, inland coins and jewelry, beachsweeping, etc. Its comfortable, light and especially fast, plus I love those DeltaPitch tones. I have been working the water with a different model lately, but the F70 is getting beach time, the thing really shines in a large expanse that has to be covered quickly. If the F70 was waterproof, Its all Id use, and I'd have two of them, one in each hand!.

I don't want say anything you would disbelieve but I think it's about the deepest.
I'm a coin hunter and don't use it anymore because two other machines give a
more accurate VID but there depth is 3" or more less than the F70.

Frank -
I got a F70 with both elliptical and DD coils and have used it since the Spring thaw. It took some time to dial in settings that I could feel comfortable with - very sensitive to any metal under the coil. I found the DD coil to be especially sensitive - but difficult to pinpoint and also hard to differentiate when there were multiple items (such as a tab and a coin) under the coil. I have been using the elliptical coil for simple tot lot sweeps and recent drops and found the VDI to be pretty accurate and pinpointing a breeze when compared to the DD. Since this was my first "modern" machine since my 1982 Bounty Hunter Red Baron, I really cannot speak to other detector brands out there. It is light, comfortable with fast recovery. The DD coil covers a wide swath and pulls out quarters and dimes (deepest found so far with this unit was a silver quarter about 6" deep) with good, repeatable "sweet" tones. Ragged tones are steel bottle caps, can slaw or other debris. As with any detector, read the manual, plant a test garden and experiment with the available settings to figure out which "translation" combination best communicates to your ears through the headphones. Regardless of which modern instrument you buy, you will be successful! Happy hunting!

I do! I do! :detecting: I only have the F70. I have always had more than one machine, not anymore. Mud is right. It is light, fast, well balanced, versatile, simple, has a pretty good coil selection, batteries last a long long time and it is reliable day after day. I think the F70 is one of the best coin machines. It is not the deepest. I am a coin hunter. I only use the 6.5" coil and I get great results on coins and swinging all day (2-6 hours) every day for weeks, if conditions allow. No sore, tired arm. In summer I will be out there on over 100 days hunting. I am in my 70's. I have had a number of the top of the line detectors but could never hunt that way with them. My arm would give out on me and I would have to take rest days to get my arm better for another hunt. A number of good machines came out about the same time as the F70 and I don't think people gave it a chance, they just went to some other machines with more bells, whistles and hype? It's not for everyone but the people that use them daily will give good reports about the F70 because it fits their type of hunting. Thanks for reading Frank and Happy Trails....Z

Zeek is right about the battery life. My f70 is still on it's first set of batteries and the bar meter is still maxed out. I use the PP a lot to locate my finds which used to drain the 2x 9v on my old f2 real quick. I probably would have used 2 sets of 9v by now compared to 1 set of 4 AA for this machine. That is a big savings considering the cost of 4 Energizer 9v. (tried cheaper ones and the f2 ate them like candy).

Other than that. I love it for all the reasons already stated.

It takes a certain type to really appreciate the F70. You will love it, hate it, or discard it completely
before you figure out which. I was first attracted to the fisher F5 and still crave having one. I stumbled onto
a like new F70 for nearly the same price as the F5 was new. An offer I couldn't refuse.
I vowed not to give up because Fisher Labs is a capable company and must have had a reason for building it
and I was determined not to give up until I figured out just what that reason was.
The first two weeks with her is like playing poker with a babbling idiot. She will ramble on and on about anything
she thinks you will believe. 2 weeks till about 4 months is like playing poker with a drunk who has a lot of th's
and ch's at the beginning and end of his words which is a product of false signals. I run my F70 quite chatty with no discrimination, and
delta tones. You get quite an assortment of vocabulary. I find by running 0 discrimination, seems you get a little less falsing at a
higher sensitivity.
From 4 months to about 6 months, (I hunt usually 2 to 5 hours every day so your time may vary) it is like playing poker with
a liar who is very good at bluffing. You need to learn his "tells". Every liar has a tell and metal detecting is for the most part the same.
For example when you hit that large deep rusty iron and that false signal comes up a sweet 70's with no fuzz what so ever
with a TID of a cald quarter, back and forth, forward and back, wait for it ,now 90 degrees just for safe measure, yup, you guessed it,
a big ole iron fart. And there is your tell, you have just busted a liar. Stay tabs and nickels are another example only
the tell there is the VDI numbers. It seems the longer you radiate or examine an object, the harder it is for that object to continue it's
lying. The nickel will stick with its numbers no matter what direction, no matter how long you radiate. They will not resort to falsing.
The stay tabs, foil, and beaver tails will eventually show their hand with enough constant examination and will resort to falsing or
flickering numbers
The F70 is so flexible in many ways. From Mudpuppy's unique style of run and gun for quick spills to a laid back lets see just how
deep this thing can go style. I am finding myself wanting a smaller DD coil but am afraid I will loose some of the understanding
I have with the F70 now by getting one. I have been able to unravel some pretty messy sites with the concentric coil but I know
I am missing some stuff. I even have considered just putting a sniper on the Ace 250 and leaving the F70 just the way it is.
What do you guys think? Summing up, if you are one with your F70, it can be an amazing experience------HH--Larry

Guess there isn't as many of the F70 users as I thought. Any suggestions for an alternate trash coil for the F70? I'm using the 10" concentric.
Another option would be a 5"x8" DD on the Ace 250.-----------HH

I bought a used Fisher 5" round dd coil a couple months back.

Works like a charm.

Been able to snag dimes at 6". The audio and confidence gets a bit weak if on edge at that depth, but the vdi numbers are still solid. Large objects lie toy cars, bottle caps, and quarters can be picked up a little deeper clearly.

Separates trash on a rail. The small foot print is an advantage to begin with, but the dd design can really separate objects that are within inches of each other. Only drawback is you have to swing more, but, the weight is non existent almost like not having a coil on it at all.

I've seen NEL now has a full line of copy coils, but my experience with the 12x13 dd tornado on the f2 was that the vdi numbers changed although the coil was really responsive. Also over priced. I prefer the Fisher coils or that reason. Price and VDI consistancy.

You are using a F5 coil on the F70? I was told that is a mismatch in the electronics or is that wrong?

What Frank said.

The 5" dd I am using is for the f75/f70.
http://www.fisherlab.com/hobby/detector-searchcoils.htm

My recollection is a bit foggy off the top of my head, but I believe my coil even says f75 on the heel.

Ok , so the 5" round DD has a blade simulation of 5" long? How about the 6.5" elliptical. Is that one a concentric coil?----Larry

Yes. the 5" round dd acts like a regular dd. No detection on the slides of the coil as if you could draw a line from toe to heel with a marker right down the middle.

My understanding is, maybe someone that owns one could chime in, is the 6.5" eliptical is a concentric.

Hope that helps. :beers:

Zeeks been swinging a 6.5 lately. I bet it would be great in a totlot near the iron poles. My 11"dd can only get so close before it overloads, but running a light sens helps if that's all you have, hearing some sort of interruption in the normal overload is possible, but again, a fellow can only get so close, like a foot..

been using mine about 8 months now, learning curve is steep and long! but hang with it is well worth it. last two days, 2 hunts, 201 coins including some wheats and a 1942 wasington silver, and one 10k white gold ring! when you click with the f70 it is like the dawn of a new age!
HH Ed in co.

Hi guys. I use the 6.5" almost all the time and I do have the 11" and standard coils. It is very light and it comes with the lower rod and hardware that is the only reason I got the 6.5" coil. It is good in tight places like tot lots and next to walls, fences turn the sensitivity down and even get closer. I use it to detect big fields because I can swing it all day and go hunting again the next day. It gives me the kind of depth I am after around 5". I am not a high tech guy it makes no difference if the 6.5" is a DD coil or concentric to me. I would guess it is not a DD because it usually says it is a DD coil on the ads for the coils. I don't care how my car works all I need to know is how to keep it running for the 100,000 miles I usually get out of the cars I have. It is the same with metal detectors. I want to learn how to get the most out of it. Only one way to do it, going out there and using it. I usually find within a short time if the detector will fit my needs or not. The F70 does a very good job at matching what I need. The experience will tell you about those double clicks near the poles to check with the pin point. To use different ways of coming at a signal. To use a probe/pin pointer to get the exact location of a target and not mess around. I use a step by step method to find coins and retrieve them. No messing around. My holes are about 3" round when I have to dig and a slit when I don't dig.
Sorry guys. I think you can't make good decisions without personal informationin in the mix. There is too much information that is bogus as my great grandson says. So thanks guys for looking in and it is your hobby to enjoy. Happy Trails....Z
