Anyone use a Surfmaster PI DF for prospecting?

It's very doubtful that the Surfmaster PI DF will be able to handle the poor ground one will encounter in nugget bearing areas. You will need a PI detector with the ability to ground balance like the TDI.

Spoke to White's tech yesterday, he said it will do a very god job of ignoring the bad ground. Of course I told him I already had one as to avoid a sales pitch. Still hoping someone comes along that has given it a try. If not I will post my results as I compare it to my Xterra 705. If I get my way however, they will both be replaced by the new GPX5000. Thanks Pete

years ago I tryed my whites pi made for the surf for nugget hunting...it sang over every hot rock and drove me nutty..er.

there are much better choices

Hi Buck,

The detector you have doesn't have any form of ground balance so there is a strong possibility you will have problems using it in most areas, especially on land. As for hunting in or around water, that is another issue and whether you can use it easily or not will depend upon the ground base. If it is volcanic or a clay base, then you will have problems. If it is granite or other similar rock base and has active water running that has washed away the clay, it might be possible the detector will work.

Fortunately, the newer DF units have circuitry that should minimize signals from typical hotrocks. The exceptions will be volcanic rocks or rocks containing other minerals that normally would be detected even by a ground balancing PI.

Many years ago, I used a non ground balancing PI in some of the active stream beds of Colorado and it worked fine. However, when I went up the bank just a little and the ground signal was extremely bad making the detector extremely difficult to use. Your unit will or could act the same way. The areas where mine worked fine had no volcanic rocks either.
