Apples to apples question.

Since I am already Minelab 800 committed and have never used the Sunray 8".
Can anyone give a user comparison on these two coils ?
Just curious.

Excelerator 6" coil. I have done actual in field testing on deeper targets with all three coils over the same target once I located them. Both the Minelab and sunray are excellent coils and I have found lots of stuff with both of them. With my experimenting though...neither of them found something the other coil wouldn't have. In other words..they each sounded the same over all the targets I located and tested on before I dug them. Even in fairly heavy trash areas they did pretty well on 7" to 8" coins. The 6" coil however is a completely different ballgame for me. On quite a few iffy targets which sounded "maybe" at best on the 800 and sunray 8"...sounded like a textbook coin hit on the 6" coil at depths of 8"...and a few at 9"...especially when the coin was directly in the hole on top of or beneath a tab...nail...etc...and that's the honest truth. I sold my 4.5 x 7" coil after all the testing I did...but still have the Minelab 800 and the sunray 8"...but the coil I use if the 1050 coil isn't on ...is the 6" Excelerator. In my area and for my settings...the 6" coil gets the same depth as the 8" coils...and it will definately sniff out a lot of walked over deep silver that I miss with the 8" coils with trash in the hole. I have proven that to myself over and over in the last 3 months by hunting the same sites.
Now after rambling...I realize you were asking about only the 8"ers and my response would honestly be that the Sunray might be just a tad deeper in my area...but it should be slightly as it's 1/2" bigger. I do know that both coils can be run hot and I run them both at 32 semi auto. Once somebody tipped me off to the 1050 coil though...and I won't mention any names as to who...NH Bob...NH Bob...NH Bob...NH Bob...NH Bob:rolleyes:....The 1050 along with the 6" Excelerator have done me quite well as a lethal 1-2 punch. If I'm in the open field..I'll pop on the 12.5" Excelerator though...otherwise it's the 6" and 1050.

I guess if that's the case, one couldn't really go wrong with either coil.
I'm taking the 15" WOT out of my arsenal and replacing it with the Sunray 12. A little easier for this Ole boy to swing for 5 or 6 hours at a time.
Hopefully I will get a little more depth out of the SR 12 than the 1050 along with the extra coverage. This of course would be for field hunting where the coil is off the ground by a couple inches.
Thanx for your reply Bryce.

I have personally seen Bryce do amazing things with that little six inch coil and I was very envious. So, I stole $125.00 out of the wife's cookie jars for food and ordered me one. The wife, me and our twelve children had to eat oat meal for breakfast, lunch and dinner for a few months, but it was worth it :nopity:

That little coil really improved my finds! The combination of the settings Bryce suggested and the coil did wonders.... The coil has finally paid for itself, and we're back to our habitual eating standatds of opossum hamburger helper. Really, that coil, his knowledge and settings doubled my nice finds, hands down...Opossum anyone???

I'LL SECOND THAT, I'VE BEEN HUNTING THE LAST TWO MONTHS WITH BRYCE AND HIS SIX INCH COIL TAKING HIM TO PLACES THATS BEEN HAMMERED TO DEATH FOR THIRTY YEARS OR MORE AND SEEN THIS COIL PULL OUT MORE COPPER AND SILVER THAN I COULD FIND IN TWO DAYS. IT REALLY IS A KILLER COIL. I HAVE THE FIVE INCH EXCEL, THE SEVEN IN A HALF MINELAB, 10.50 MINELAB AND WILL SOON HAVE THE 12.50 EXCEL OR I WOULD BUY THIS SIX INCH COIL IN A HEARTBEAT, YOU JUST HAVE TO BE STANDING THERE WHEN SOMEONE DIGS UP A EARLY LARGE CENT RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU WHILE YOUR DIGGING UP A SEATED DIME, I WAS SO HAPPY FOR HIM I FORGOT WHAT I HAVE FOUND, SO WHEN HE GIVES YOU COIL ADVICE, YOU SHOULD TAKE IT.WE'VE HAD A CHANCE TO CHECK OUT SOME OF THESE COILS THAT HE HAS OVER UNDUG TARGETS AND PROBALY WILL GET A CHANCE TO TEST SOME MORE THE RESULTS SHOULD BE INTERESTING CAN'T WAIT.....PHIL

Thanks for the information Bryce. I have the 5 inch coil. I might look at picking up the 6 inch next spring. It sounds like a very good coil!
