Aquasearch returns to Texas..........

Gulf Hunter

Active member
MrBill sent my Aquasearch back safe & sound to me on friday. I have a friend who is going to design a mounting bracket for the control housing to stem for me. My problems began on my 4th hunt with the unit in the surf, when I ripped the wire out of the control housing, when I spooked a school of baitfish and they spooked me. Hip mounting=surf death. It's a bad idea! Anyway, MrBill installed an 8" coil and it pinpoints like a dream and does not seem to have lost much depth from what I can tell. I am also able to run pulse delay at 10uS, with stability. The unit was very unstable and irratic at 10uS with the 11" coil. I am also able to run the SAT on fast and the threshold recovers much quicker when a wave passes over the coil. Once I get the control housing mounted to the stem, this is going to be an awesome unit! Perhaps I could post a pic of the final design, if anyone's interested. GH

GH,

Always interested.....I have Eric's GQSS hip mounted and no problems so far even after being tumbled by large waves that creep up on you....post away of the finished setup and let us know how it feels.

Thanks,
Tony.:ausflag:

Looking forward GH to the picture once you get the mounting bracket secured to the Aquasearch housing, It's good to share ideas with others.

Which cable did you rip out, Coil or headset? I'm not familiar with the Aquasearch connections if they are hard wired or by way of a connector. But I do know they are a hot Pi.

This is Scott in Maine....you still use the GQ SS I sold you ...correct?
Am I correct in that you are somewhat able to ID iron by reverse disc with it.
I ask as I have some good fields that are slammed but there is still alot down deep and a PI is all that would work and I have never tried to reverse disc with a PI.
not looking for 100 % accuracy but at the moment my only other option is all metal VLF and heck that is 0 disc and basically like using a PI less the dpeth.

That's a clean looking setup Mike, I bet she operates fantastic as a waterproof Pi.

Here's something I tossed together about 3 years ago, One of Eric's GoldQuest SS designs mounted inside a Whites Pi housing. She's a little dirty and needs a scrub but works great. Even has an inline probe mounted on the side.

The circuit board has been around the block several times, Scott had it before me and used it as a gold nugget detector. When I acquired the unit I changed it to a waterproof detector since my hunting needs with Pi's is more in the surf and wet sand.

Hello Scott,

Yes, I still use the GQ SS you sold me. Only now it's a beach detector not the cool gold nugget detector you changed it to.

With reverse discrimination one can check targets but when there's too much iron then it becomes annoying to check all the signals, But since you're already digging everything with an VLF might as well go with a good Pi with reverse discrimination capabilities.

The GS5 would be the Pi to use for your particular area, Not too many of these around but if you ever get the chance to use one try one out.

Keep us posted with your gold nugget hunting Scott, Always fun to read your adventures.

Below is a close-up pic of your old GQ circuit board, This dude has been around the block too many times :) Amazing but it barely squeezed inside this housing.

got mine back today, will probably go to galveston sunday eveing. i haven't hunted in so long i might have forgot how. see you down there. hh

Is that this coming sunday as in the 27th? PM me later in the week and remind me, maybe we can hook up down there.

California, I ripped the coil control housing wire out of the housing and it was hard wired. It was a REAL bad deal and I had a tantrum in the surf after I had just spent $1500 on the unit and only used it 4 times! Will post up the finished product when completed. It will not happen again!

Actually you were my inspiration for mounting the control housing to the stem. I wanted it that way from the beginning, but MrBill said that there was no option for mounting it that way. If you have an extra mounting bracket, I'll take it Mike! How is your bouyancy with the control housing mounted to the stem? Is it hard to keep it down in the surf, as the housing has air in it? How deep do you hunt out there? I like yer setup, but I think that I will prefer mine to be mounted on the front side of the pole, below the grip. That wire hanging down there by my fingers, looks like trouble for me, but then I am HARD on equipment.
