Aquastar and Goldquest SS - which one to buy?

I'm thinking about buying a Aquastar. After reading abouth the GoldquestSS I'm not sure which I should buy. At present I hunt only the beache in FL but may hunt some in N.C. on day. I like finding coins but my main thing is finding gold. Will the Goldquest SS do just as well as the Aquastar in wet and dry sand? Can the coil on the Goldquest be used in shallow salt water, and what are the sizes on coils for each? Thanks HH
 
I can only answer from experience on the Goldquest SS and not the Aquastar. The Goldquest is extremelly sensitive on gold more so than any detector I have owned...I have owned the Whites PI, CS7 and HH PI....I am told by a Aquastar owner that the Goldquest Ss is 80 to 85% as strong as the Aquastar...I can run the Goldquest a 10uS on dry and wet sand without falsing and when in the water, I have to turn it back just a bit I figure 15uS. I believe I have whipped that by stablizing the coil wire to the rod so that it's movement will not affect the unit in the water...again I have not tested that yet. The depth of my unit is a true 15" on a US Nickle but not unit I bought the better headphones for it. Old cheap-o's only allowed me to hear 13 to 14" on the nickel. I chest mount the unit with a belt and suspenders and the control box is in the middle of my chest. I would highly reccomend the water proof model when it come out because it generally is just a matter of time till you dunk the unit. I figure my Goldquest is 5 to 8" deeper on the same gold ring. High school rings are in the 17" to 20" range on air test...My coil is 11" and I think they make a 8"....Frank
 
Thanks Frank. I hear the Aquastar is the best out there but if the Goldquest II is better on small gold and almost as good on large gold then it's much cheaper and more in my price range.. Do you know when there will be a waterproof modle out? Thanks

No, the Goldquest SS does not do as well as the Aquastar II in wet, and dry sand. The Aquastar II has a lot more power, and the availability of more controls for the user to adjust to prevailing conditions. As far as being sensitive to small gold, there about the same, but brute depth would go to the Aquastar II. They both respond to the same size, low conductive jewelry, but the Aquastar has a little better response, and it can get it deeper.
My advice: Unless you have to have the most sensitive, the deepest, badass, Pi detector there is, I would go for the Goldquest SS. Nothing to worry about making the compromise, there
 
Thanks Mr.Bill. Looks like I have to sell either my Sovereign or CZ-20 so I can get a new machine. Still haven't decided which but thinking the Goldquest is probably as deep as I want to dig in the wet sand.

I've been using the Goldquest SS for a couple of months now, both in the water and on the wet sand.
I couldn't wish for better performance as far as stability or depth goes.
I have the control box set up in a waterproof housing with the two leads sealed with removable cable glands. I'm not able to access the controls when detecting, but the great thing is I have never needed to. The machine is very smooth and punches unbelievably deep. The bulk of my finds are mostly dis-coloured coins (green and black) that other detectors simply haven't been able to reach down to.
I'd be very surprised if you required any more depth that this unit will give you, especially in the water.
Performance is only slightly behind the most powerful of PI's.
The coil performs extremely well in the water (I have had it to 3 to 4 feet). The REJECT setting needs to be advanced to the second mark from the minimum position, which on my machine equates to about 16uS.
If you want maximum depth and stability without the need for serious discrimination, and a turn on and go set up, this machine can't be matched......thanks again Eric.

Please post a photo of your waterproofing of your Goldquest SS... or if possible send it to me direct...I would love to see how you do it..Frank
 
Read with interest your mounting technique. I did about the same thing. However, I did not want the restriction of a belt, so I bought a 3 in wide Ace Roller Bandage, Connected the ends together and made a U shaped clip from a coat hanger. I also made a wire device that goes through the slot on the Goldquest case. This has loops on each end where I can attach my neck loop. This is very secure and does not interfere with my breathing.

I just traded for an Aquastar...
It is an Impressive machine and well made.
I have been bizzy at school. But did get it wet Saturday... I found Two nice size gold rings and found out how out of shape this old water hunter is. it will take me awhile longer to get this set up exactly the way i like it but wide open it is quite a machine. So if you are a serious water hunter and you have pulse experience then belly up to the bar and put your money down! Best to all and keep your coil Wet!

Just got back from the beach. I got a 900 platinum band which bring me up to 18 platinum rings this year with my Aquastar.

The set up I use consists of a:
-150mm stormwater coupling (threaded on one end and able to receive a section of 150mm pipe on the other)
-150mm end cap
-150mm threaded cap (complete with it
 
Your explaination is quite complete and easy to read and understand, I do thank you and will await your photo's. I have in the past tried to find the waterproof knobs used by Fisher, like on the CZ20. I would like to have some spares lying about, never know. In this case with your waterproof connectors for coil wire and headphones and Fisher waterproof knobs the unit could have the controls outside...But then I would have a new Aquaquest or simular. Must be the cold weather and been inside to too long...
