Are 2500 mAh double A rechargeable batteries safe to use with the Quattro?

Hi All. My mom purchased a pack of double A rechargeable 2500 mAh batteries with a charger for my quattro. I don't have the rechargeable battery pack so I know I'll have to open up the battery pack and take them out to charge them, but my biggest concern was if their safe to use in the Quattro? I wrote to a Minelab Rep. about them and they told me to "not" use them, and I was told not to use rechargeable batteries higher than 2100 mAh as the 2500's could ruin my machine. Has anyone else heard about this, or am I safe using the 2500's? Thank-you. Sincerely, Randy

you dont have to do that I just bought a charger that does it while it the case here is the web site

Hey yogaguy, that's a good question. I thought about this not long ago and remember reading about it on some other posts. If I remember correctly, another reader posted the same question and was told not to go higher than 2500mAh (don't quote me on that, I'll try to find the other posts)! I've also seen used Minelabs for sale that sometimes include standard brand 1600 up to 2500mAh cells. So, I hope some Explorer/Quattro users could shed some light on this subject as I was thinking the same thing. It's hard NOT to find 2500ma cells in the stores, I guess you can find lower draw cells if ordered on line (if that's what works the best). As far as I know, any electronic/electric device will only draw the current (measured in amps or milliamps) that's required from that device. You also have to remember, If you use Alkaline cells 8 = 12 volts 1.5v per cell, where rechargeable cells 8 = 9.6 volts 1.2v per cell. If anyone knows for sure, please let us know the maximum safe rechargeable size cell that can be used. Thanks!!!

I know many use the 2500mAh recharge ables in their Explorers and Quattros and haven't heard of any real problem with them. I do know as I have seen this myself when getting into the higher mAh rechargeable batteries as my 2200 I have are this way. These are slightly longer so they fit in the packs tight and sometimes too tight and breaks the battery pack. I just use one of my Sun Ray chargers so I can charge them right in the pack so I don't have to take them out.
The rechargeable packs Minelab used to have and can still be gotten are the 1600 and 1800 mAh batteries in them. The ones Minelab now uses with the new Explorers is the alkaline packs with 8 of the 1600 mAh and a charger that will charge all 8 at one time, but have to come out of the pack to do this.
I will have to take a micrometer and measure some of my rechargeable AA batteries and see how much longer some of these are. I do know some of the 1800 I have will out last the 2200 I have when detecting and the 1800 are over 4 years old too.

As far as ruining the detector I haven't heard of this before and if anyone else has heard this or why I too would like to know the reason it would do this as the mAh should just be the storing capacity.

I have been using the energizer 2500's both in my MXT and Quattro with no problems. I use a MRC super brain 959 and charge them in the battery pack.

Hi Yogaguy,
I use Energizer Double AA 2500mAh rechargeables in my battery pack for the Quattro with no problems whatsoever. But I like to run the batteries dry before recharging them again, as if you don't they retain a 'memory' and don't fully properly charge if not flat.
Hope that makes sense.
Cheers Angela
