Are volume control headphones necessary?

Per the tracking number, my Silver uMAX is scheduled for delivery on April Fool's Day . . . I have some inexpensive Sony headphones as well as a Bose over-the ear plus a set of Bose earplugs. I on't see any reference to a volume control for the uMAX but are headphones with a volume control more of a necessity or just a convenience? Thanks.

I guess to start you can tryout the phones you have but I prefer to use headphones with a volume control. I don't like my volume to be loud or low and having a volume control lets you dial in a comfortable volume level. Once you get in the field it won't take long to figure out if you like your headphones or not. Best of luck with your new Tesoro and good hunting!

Yeah, good headphones are important...that said, I ran elcheapos for a few years when I first started and found some stuff...its nice to have a well fitting comfortable set of phones that a guy can adjust the 'stereo' volume to balance the sound equally...We all have one ear thats worse than the other, so good phones with the adjustment are nice...makes for a better overall experience, better tones and those finds that are right on the fringe..

I use a non-adjustable volume set on my water rig, so I have to stuff a piece of foam in my 'good' ear side to compensate...it works ok..

Most long time hunters will tell you not to go cheap on your phones...if you cant hear it, you cant find it..you are asking all the right questions and thinking this through with some logic we all appreciate! You gotta good rig coming, so you may want to consider getting a quality set of phones...your rig might 'hear' the find of a lifetime, but if the signal is not getting to YOUR CPU on account of some cheap phones, then all is lost..

I'm a big time user of Tesoro detectors. I wasted a lot of money on cheaper headphones. I finally wised up and got me a set of Killer B Wasp headphones. They work great with Tesoro detectors. They have a audio limiter circuit that can be switch on and off. I use the limiter circuit all time to save my ears and still be able to hear those deep targets. Oh yeah, they're comfortable to wear and come with a limited lifetime warranty (you pay shipping).

When you look at my finds pictures of the hole shots, you'll see a set of Killer B Wasp Headphones next to the hole.

Many detectors DO NOT have volume control and therefore headphones with volume control are a real plus in my opinion, especially as several of mine are way too loud without a control..

I use grey ghost and I really like them. I used a cheaper pair for years and I wish that I upgraded when I first started hunting.

I second the Grey Ghost originals. They are a quality headphone that are not overpriced. I am not knocking the higher priced ones, I just think the Grey Ghost are a good happy medium and work quite well. I also started out with cheapies and then bought a inline volume control from Wally World. After using the Grey Ghost I never looked back. Like I said, there are better, but the Grey Ghost work well with the Silver uMax and are about mid price range for detecting headphones.

i know with the the vaquero a volume control is a must. if not, a target is loud with them on. i usually dont use them. only when people are around that the beeping may annoy. probably should more often. just do not care for them much especially the wire. i use a good wireless set that needed a volume control in line before the transmitter. to cut the signal down a bit unless you got feedback in the headset.
