As a brand new user...would you

use the 11" Pro coil that comes with the SE Pro, or a 10" x 12" SEF coil while learning and listening?

I am brand new to the hobby, and received my first machine Monday. The wife gave me the okay to buy the SEF coil at the point of purchase. I was out hunting our local park yesterday & today using the SEF, and this got me thinking that perhaps I should be using the stock coil instead of the SEF while learning and listening. I'd really like to hear everyone's opinion.

I am listening to Bryce, Andy and so many others that have strongly suggested to leave the factory settings during this initial learning process. The only 2 buttons I have touched on the face plate is power and noise cancel so far. And as difficult as it is to not tinker with the settings, I intend to use the factory settings for at least the first 10-15 hours, maybe more, who knows.

I do have many questions, but I think it best, for now, to just use the machine before throwing out question after question. Chris

it depends on where you hunt and how many targets would be under the coil....
My thoughts are, any unit is easier to learn with a small or smaller coil...
There are places that I use my 11" and places that I use my 6 x 8 SEF coil and places that I use my 5.5" Sun Ray coil..
The places that I hunt the most of, have some to a lot of trash.
So what ever works for you.

Unlike you i bought the SE ... before the pro came out. I had to decide which coil would serve me best and nothing has changed my mind about making the right choice. I use the SEF. Why??? It was the price just because there isnt that much difference. The pro is lighter and anytime and may be more sensitive to tiny targets.... but the SEF was $60 cheaper and separates very well for its size. I also think it hits a little harder. IF... id gotten the pro coil thou i wouldnt have bought the SEF... id went for a smaller coil as my second coil. Thats me.

I know I will be coin shooting in the local parks, and hitting the beaches here in So. Cal. As of right now, relic hunting does not appeal to me. Perhaps later.

I have learned since placing the original order that the 8 x 6 would have given me more flexibility and versatility...but that is water under the bridge at this point. I can see in the future buying a smaller coil for those trashy areas. It was probably a mistake on my part to have ordered the 10 x 12 and not the 8 x 6. But the question still remains, would it be more advantageous for a beginner to learn on the 11" Pro coil or the SEF, since those are my only 2 options?

Here's an idea, grover...maybe you should decide which has more value on the used market, and then keep the other one. Then, with the cash you get for the coil, you can buy an 8x6.

I kind of agree with Steve. Should you decide to sell the SE down the line, i dont think its and advantage to have both those coils. You really need more time on the machine before you can make that kind of decision and that has to be your decision. The Explorers are a very personal machine, you have to find your settings and the coil that you TRUST. There are people with both coils but i dont think any of them say THIS COIL is clearly the best. Id start with the Pro coil simply because its matched to the machine by the manufacturer since you have it. Bryce has proved that you can follow behind either coil and find coins. I think you would get more for the Pro coil just because its what everyone is looking for and it has that $60 higher price tag.

i have both these coils i got my se pro last fall and of course it came with the pro coil but i also bought the 10 by 12 at the same time i like both these coil the same the pro coil is lighter then the sef but as far as learning sounds either coil should work fine the sef sometimes bit more stable and snags less in woods type hunting pro coil lighter and i fell it hits a little deeper but both give out good clear tones so you can learn any way you go the sef covers ground a little better only because its bigger but here again im also still learning the explorer se and loving each time out with this excellent detector like all say stick with presets awhile just to get good feel for the se i still go back to presets time to time good stable settings that also make deep finds have fun good hunting
