AT pro question

Has Garrett addressed and corrected the problem of the control housing breaking away from the shaft on some AT's ?

John, the problem appears to be with the length of the mounting screws. The factory installed ones were too short.

Nuggetnoggin did a simple mod with longer screws that solved the problem.

I would call Garrett on that one. If the screws are too big, the plastic housing could split. At least call them for the proper length to be on the safe side.

I remember that....took a mental note....I have not changed mine, bought it in july of 2012...used it very hard for several years now with no ill effects..tossed it in the boat, car, water...my greatest fear is to have any detector fall over when leaning it up against the car or something...so I take great care that it doesnt happen...but I dont baby it in field...so this was perhaps a concern, but in my case I have had no problem with those screws..
Mud.

I've used mine hard for two years now and no problems. Like Mud, I kind of recall something about the screws, but just never worried about it and have had no problems. HH jim tn

I've had 1 x AT Pro snap the control box off the stem when I left it outside my tent a couple of years ago. We went to bed at about 2200hrs & the outside air temp was only 8 degrees centigrade. At about 0200hrs, we were woken up by a "snapping sound" & upon investigation, we found the control box laying beside the stem. It had snapped off at the level at the length of the 2 screws that hold the head on. The outside temperature was minus 11 degrees centigrade!
When I did an analysis of the break, it is clear that the 2 screws that hold the control box onto the stem are about 4mm too short.

I also lent my AT Gold to a "Friend" for the weekend, once again the head had snapped off level with the screw length. I don't know how this happened on this occasion.

What I have done is to measure the depth of the screw lugs by putting a toothpick in the hole & marking the toothpick with a pencil at the top of the lug level. I then went to my hardware store & bought 2 stainless steel screws & filed them off about 1mm SHORTER than the measurement taken above - I didn't want to pierce the base of the screw hole & let water inside the control box.(NOTE: going from memory, both holes are not the same depth - when you file back your replacement screws, use the shorter one as your guide)

I firmly believe that Garrett needs to look at making stronger "anchor" points where the 2 screws hold the head onto the stem. I've bought 2 AT detectors & had 2 failures at the same point - 1 I know the cause of.
I love my detectors but I won't be buying another "AT" detector until this problem is rectified.

Problem? I've owned 4 AT Pro's and never had any such issues. I think I've seen one post of someone who laid something on it and it broke off.
