ATPro Question

Looking at a good light weight coin machine with good balance. How is the Pro with the 5x8 coil? I read that the stock coil is heavy or poorly balanced? Thanks Joe

I don't find the larger stock coil to be heavy and poorly balance enough to be a problem. However, the 5x8 coil is like swinging a feather. Both sizes are necessary in my opinion, though. HH jim tn

I can honestly say that the AT Pro is a very good coin machine.:)

I'd suggest trying to find someone locally that has one and swing it for a couple of hours to see what you think about it being light weight and well balanced.

You're standard for light weight and well balanced my differ greatly from another person's standard.

I agree with the others. The 5x8 is very light and a pleasure to swing but I like the stock 85.x11 just as much. It give quite a bit more depth and coverage with just a little more of a nose heavy feel.

My views were formed by swinging an ACE 250 then a Tesoro Tejon. I found the ATP 8.5x11 coil to feel heavy initially. And it put my arm to sleep after a while. I am used to that now. It seemed like my body compensated after a few weeks. But I still feel the coil weight when I aim the coil shoulder or head high to check an overhead river bank, for an extended period. After long term use I doubt that I will ever take this coil off. I am used to the slightly head heavy feel now to the point were it is close to unnoticeable, and I enjoy pretty much everything about the ATP. It's a pleasurable machine to use and it has decent depth.

Take your bike up a hill the first time and that hill will kick your butt. Rest a day and do it again and then again, and then again. After two weeks you'll breeze up the hill and wonder why it seemed so hard the first time. Same with the 8.5 x 11 coil. It may seem heavy to you when you first start out but in time it is no issue at all.
Good luck and HH!

It all depends on how long you extend the lower rod, body mechanics and your muscle mass to allow you to hunt for extended periods. The small 5" x 8" is an awesome coil, especially in trashy areas. If you hunt often, the weight of most metal detectors isn't an issue.

Yeah, I'm used to the stock 8.5x11now after 2yrs...I was just thinking about what togamac and John said this morning as I covered 5 miles of sand and 3 of water with it...it takes a little while to get in sync with any rig, and settle down a bit so a fellow can swing it at the proper comfortable speed without tearing yourself up. First year was tough on account of I like to swing wide and fast..still do, but finally found the balance...then again I'm big beach/big water hunting so I need a big coil to cover a lot of realestate in a hurry....first year it wore me out a few times on account of I was trying to be too aggressive...now its comfortable, no pain or anything.

I like them both. Since I detect mostly in fresh water, the weight of the coil is not much of a concern. When I first got the 5 X 8, I honestly didn't like it and stuck with the stock coil. When I sent my At/Pro in for repair and found out the 5 X 8 was defective even tho I'd only tried to use it 2-3 times, I started using it. It found some real small targets that I might have missed with the stock coil because I do swing it a tad faster in the water than the 5 X 8. After using the 5 X 8 coil for 2-3 hunts, I felt out of place with the stock coil and felt like a bull in a china shop, but settled down with the stock coil my last hunt and found some small targets and I'm just happy with both of them.
Now I just got to break in my sniper coil for the At/Pro. Weight concerns me with my back and neck injury and I don't use the 12 inch coil on my GTI-2500 due to this. Like they say, use it a few times and you probably won't notice the weight. GL & HH.
