i just bought a gamma an took it out friday for the first time. about two hours into the hunt i noticed a small wet spot in the middle of the L.C.D. screen. i thought at first a drop of swet fell on the screen cover, but it was not, it was on the L.C.D. it kelp getting bigger until it was one half inch inch round. i looked at it through my loops,an it looks like a pinhold in the screen. is it possible for the liquid to seep out if theres a hold in the screen? i guess ill be sending it in to F.T.
 
Are you sure it's not water that somehow got in there?

LCD's are made like a double-pane window: two panes of glass sealed along the edge. Between the two pieces of glass is the active fluid that modulates light reflection. When an LCD leaks, it's usually because the seal along the edge was damaged through mishandling, although an actual manufacturing defect of the seal itself isn't a complete impossibility. If there's a crack that runs across the face of the LCD, fluid will leak through that: you'll probably be able to see the crack if you look closely.

For a pinhole leak to develop on the face of the LCD, I've never heard of that and can't imagine how such a thing could happen. The manufacturing process for the glass itself doesn't produce pinholes. If in fact you've got a pinhole leak, you've got a heckuva mystery on your hands.

In any case, if it's leaking fluid (i.e., it's not water that somehow got inside) the LCD is going to fail, so it may as well come back to the factory. If it's a pinhole leak on the front of the LCD we'd probably want to send that one back to the LCD manufacturer for them for failure analysis.. Since the tech may not think of doing that, please include with the machine a letter describing what's wrong and say that Dave Johnson wants to see it before it's worked on (since removal of the LCD from the PC board is likely to further damage it, complicating failure analysis).

thanks dave for your fast responce. theres more to the story. like i said, i hunted for about two hours. clear day, no water or rain. looking straight at the vdi its hard to see. when i first noticed the spot, it was about one eight of an inch round. i got home, set it in the corner of my room,about three hours later the spot was about one half inch in diameter. then over night it went back to one eight inch. now its back to about one halk inch again. if its moisture i cant figuer out how it got in there.i was just afraid if it was leaking it would .findly ruin the detec. i am really pleased with the way it peforms. in case it is moisture, how can i get it out? just cant figure out why the spot gets small then larger then small again once again thanks for your help. my detectors i own. dfx x5 gamma ace 150 converted for water. tiger shark
 
thanks dave. in case it is moisture, is there anyway i can get it out? the strange thang is it was a small spot at first. after setting in the corner of my room for about three hours, it went to about one half inch. then later on that night it went back to about one eight size again. i thought maby it was drying out. the next morning, which was this morning it was back to about one half inch again..strange. i only hunted for about two hours warm sunny day no water around.
 
Well, whatever it is, there are three possible outcomes.

1. It'll go away. No problem. Mystery will probably never be solved.

2. It'll stay about like it is. From what I gather, the LCD is still working and the problem is not really impairing the usability of the machine. Might want to send it in during your beeping off-season.

3. It'll get worse to where it really does need to be repaired. In which case send it in.

thanks once again dave. i didnt thank my first post took, so i double posted, sorry about that. anyway i think ill watch it for a while if it dont go away, in a reasonable time then ill send it in. no problum because its water hunting time.
 
Is it just a pressure point on the lcd? something causing pressure to be applied onto the lcd at that point????
LCD's tend to be very succeptiable to any external pressure..and temp changes could increase the pressure being applied..
 
hi Jim i only had the detc. about 14 hrs.when i took it out to a park. first time out, after about two hours i noticed the spot in the middle of the screen no pressure had been put on the vdi.ive been working with it, an i thank its possible it is moisture, but how it got there is a mystery to me
 
I did not mean that YOU put pressure on it....
If a lcd is mounted poorly they may show such marks..but that is a manufacturing defect...
Best solution is to send in in with a message to have DJ look at it...
Reason I know about lcds and pressure is I've taken classes and built kits with lcds...and they can be a pain..
