I tried manual with sens of 26 last weekend and tried audio 1. The audio 1 was completely silent until a target was encountered. I dug several deep targets so it was working but I thought audio one was a constant threshold hum with variations in pitch. Did I miss something or just have it all wrong about audio 1 setings?
 
explaining the nulls (silence).
Try backing off the sensitivity until you get a steady threshold, and give her another try.
It is expressly NOT supposed to run your machine silent, and it certainly doesn't do it on mine.
If you can run the same sensitivity with Audio=Normal and it goes silent in the same area with Audio 1, I'd contact Minelab support and see what they have to say.
