Actually it is of the bird variety. I was detecting the other day and spotted a bird just laying on the beach. I went over to it and it didn't move until I got maybe a foot from it. I stood there and studied it for awhile because I had never seen anything like it in my life!! When I got to close it stood up and started to walk away from me. The way it walked was like a penguins walk. More like a waddle. The funny thing is when it stood up, it ruffled its feathers and put them behind its back and it looked like a regal butler with a tuxedo on. It was all black except from the inside of its neck to the bottom and the very bottom of the feathers in the back when its wings were together. It also had a black beak and black eyes which had a slivered circle of white around the whole eye like it was painted on. The feet were really weird. They were very long and thin and you knew they were webbed but were tight shut. I thought it was a penguin at first. I saw two guys who were using front end loaders stop to get out to see it. I went over and asked them if they knew what the bird was.The one guy said I thought it was a penguin. Anyway I just love finding the special things. Sure rings of gold and silver are cool but the nature and beauty are part of the equation. I found out, Thanks to Max, that the bird is called a Murre or "Ringed" Murre. It is part of the Auk family of birds. They only come onto shore to mate. It's a shame I didn't see any other birds of its type around. I don't know how to post pictures but maybe if Max reads this he can post a picture for everyone to see. Or if anyone is interested you can look it up over the internet. A little off topic but a cool story. I think I am going to start carrying a camera with me. HH
