First hunt with rebuilt F5 and I have to say "shazam"! Went to the church for a short hunt and decided to only dig dimes, silver ,and quarters. I set disc at 73, gain at 50 and thresh at +5 (hot)and started sweeping. Not many signals for one hours hunt but what I found was 'sweet'!36 merc ,and 51 rosie. My reason for those settings was lack of time so I went for all or nothing (Mmmmmm, I did dig a soda can and a large piece of metal, lol can't get it rt all the time, tone was set at 4 so I should of walked away from the trash buuuuuuut ,better safe than sorry.)

Interesting background you chose for your photo. Congrats on your finds. Still waitin on my first silver coin to surface.

Lol yea, the Bible is my rule and guide. Most assume that I'm diggin up church yards when in fact I have attended this church for 43 years, have been the grounds keeper, on the building and grounds commitee, a deacon, and Sunday school chairman(whew)! This is the only church yard I MD and I only search the areas away from the cemetary. The general members enjoy seeing what is pulled out of the grounds and I may one day present the coins back to the church for showings!(I MD for the fun of it cause I sure can't feed myself doing it:)

you only have to find the right spot.
One little tip. School yards.............churches........well known picnic groves.............and playgrounds are ALL easily accessible........and are often the first hit by newcomers to the hobby. The end result of that is that finds tend to get poor at sites like that after say 40 years of it.
The trick is to research and find NEW spots. They are NOT all taken/found! I manage to find 7 or 8 brand new spots every year. mostly by word of mouth. A couple of years ago.......I found an untouched mid 1800's picnic grove right across the road from me in the woods......... not 100 yards from my house....................that yielded well over 200 indians (many many key dates).a big honking period gold ring. One gold coin. A couple dozen 2 cent pieces, a three cent piece and a Large cent. I've lived here for 17 years and never knew it was there.
I just got wind of another I've searched for for a long time but was never able to find. A local lady tells me she can take me right to it ( a long walk in the woods)
Speak to everyone you can (especially the elderly) about your hobby..........and you will be amazed at how many doors it opens. Be nice to your landowners......and share your finds........and they will tell their friends and neighbors too.
Where I live now I dont find a lot of silver......but I hunts sites where isnt found in copious amounts. When I started in this hobby 40 years ago... (where I used to live).....I had a very long street lined with victorian homes and 2-3 acre yards all to myself. It wasnt a big deal to get 40 barber coins in a day. (I'm not kidding!). I hunt mostly colonial sites now.....so I dont get too excited about silver (unless its Bust or Spanish)....................but its STILL out there in large amounts of you can find where to look.

If you have the fortitude (I say that kindly, as most detectorists are to gun shy to do this) try sidewalk grass strips in front of old houses/old business districts. Provided it is legal in the city you are doing it in. Check with the city. Sometimes homeowners may chase you off.........and I respect their wishes.......even though 99% of the time the strip belongs to the city. These a literally untouched areas....and have provided me with some awesome finds (think silver):) over the years. Weekends are usually excellent for business districts and during working/schools hours are great for neighborhoods. Sometimes owners come out to see what I am doing, and I wind up getting permission to do the front yard.
Always be cordial and respectul, as I am sure you are, even when getting chased away...lol

Great ideas guy's! I've already got abunch of old farms to hunt but I'm trying to let the turkey hunters get finished. I have to say I posted something wrong; my disc was at 65 not 73. Went back over the same part of the yard and dug a bunch of penny's with only one old one, got a 1909 wheatie! Gonna go back to the old Depot, found out there was a bank there also. It is such a 'trip to be able to search for certain stuff by using the disc but I'm about ready to go back to all metal an just start digging, that's where I get my best stuff.

outstanding areas to hunt!..been doin' 'em for a long time now,and (rarely) ever get a negative comment.
lots of trash, but good targets too!..protect yourself,as sometimes the "older" neighborhoods can be a little intimidating!
just sayin!
