Back in the USA

steve in so la

Well-known member
Got home on Amtrak tonight from Thanksgiving in Louisiana with the family. It's like the US was 30 years ago or more down there. No graffitti, kids are all polite, no gang shootings, so many people know each other. Sure glad we are moving to small town America soon.
Didn't do any detecting but raring to go now. Steve in so az

I bet you had a fun time with the family.

Ain't nothing like ths south. That is why I like going to gulf shores. The people are just nicer .

What you describe is the way it is here. Thanks, Steve, for the positive words. People who have never been here, or come here with their preconceived ideas that they get from idiotic shows on TV that portray Southerners as redneck, uneducated hillbillies, do not have a clue how it really is. Yes, there are pockets of such people here (and if truth be known, most everywhere), but for the most part, we are humble, hard working, educated, God fearing, and DO have the values that you have described. Yep, I am educated (I have a Masters Degree in Social Science Education, was a teacher for many years and now work as a Case Manager & Probation Officer for Corrections and Drug Court (and have had other good jobs). I do have all of my teeth, I live in a very nice home (with indoor plumbing and all - no out house) and we don't keep chickens and livestock inside the house. No rusted out cars up on blocks in the yard. I have two grown children who have college educations (My son has a degree in finance and is a compliance officer in the loan dept of a bank and he is also the auditor for a hotel. My daughter is a paramedic and also works in the memory unit of an assisted living facility (works with Alzheimer & dementia patients). My husband did not go to college but he has always been a hard worker. We've been married for over 29 years, and we were married for about three years before I became pregnant (not pregnant before being married and running around barefoot while wearing Daisy Duke shorts with my belly hanging out). Yes, I talk slow and have a thick country twang and Southern drawl, but please don't mistake that for ignorance or lack of education or backwardness. That's how we talk down here. We think y'all are the ones who talk funny! lol I live in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. This is a VERY rural area. Most of the small towns that surround my community are pretty much like Mayberry that you see on The Andy Griffith Show. But don't think we are dumb hicks who aren't street smart! There are plenty of large cities that aren't too far away and we spend time there too.

If you've never been to the Deep South and believe the crapola you see on stupid shows on TV about us, then please accept my invitation to come on down here and take some time to find out for yourself that most of us, and most of our areas, are as Steve and I have described. I think it would kill me to have to live anywhere else! Love my home in SWEET HOME ALABAMA!!!!!

Well put Lisa. As a former Yankee now living in the south I must say it is much better here than up there. I am originally from NH and have lived in both SC (3 years) and now NC (a little over a year). Every time I go back North (notice I didn't say, "HOME"...the south is our home, praise be to GOD hopefully forever) I say to myself, "I lived here for 33 years? What was I thinking!" Last year before we moved to NC I was at a gas station in SC and a gentleman a little older than me just walked up to me on my blind side while I was pumping gas, stuck out his hand and said, "Thank you for your service to our country." I turned around and took his hand but didn't know what to say, I just stared at him for a little while and said, "Thanks". (I have an airborne sticker on our minivan so he must've seen it when we pulled in.) I never got that up North. (I'm not trying to bash the north, but it is what it is and having lived there I feel I can weigh in on the truth.) Being a veteran in the south truly MEANS something, and I cherish that true American Patriotism and love of country :usaflag:. It still exists in many parts of this country and has not been extinguished regardless how badly some people want to strip it away.

People I work with always ask me how I like the south. The best way I answer them is that I was born "geographically challenged". If asked if I will ever go back up North the answer is always the same, "Unless it's somewhere north or Lewiston Maine, probably not." I love complimenting southerners on their hospitality, religious values, great food, and how awesome the Carolina's are in general. The history is rich, the pace isn't high strung (oh how I don't miss that!), the scenery is gorgeous, the cost of living is affordable, you can own a gun (or even TWO) and not be considered a militant wacko. The list goes on and on. Alissa and I also home school our two girls and it's waaaayyyy more accepted here in the bible belt than it is up north and TONS of families down here do it too, and there are a lot of Co-ops and organizations to join if you are a homeschooler. Blessings, blessings, blessings!

God Bless the Carolina's, two of the best places I've ever lived and definitely the way life should be! Thanks for starting this thread Steve, I feel we all need to see and talk about some of the positives still left in the world. God Bless.

Greg

I knew you would agree, Travis!

And I thank you, too, for your service to our country!

What part of South Carolina did you live in? My sister, brother-in-law, and now my mother (transplanted from Alabama) live in Anderson, SC. They used to live in Lake Wylie SC, near the Charlotte NC area.

I've been "up North" a time or two and found many of the people to be very rude, crude and obnoxious. I KNOW they aren't all like that, but that was the experience I had. And as soon as any of our group would begin to speak, they would start making fun of our Southern drawl and talking down to us like we were ignorant, backwoods inbreds who couldn't comprehend the English language. I've had the same experience with people from the California area. I have no desire to travel north of the Mason Dixon Line, or west of Louisiana. Texas often claims to be part of the South, but the true south doesn't consider them to be. Florida either. Don't get me wrong! I love all of our country, but the South is where it's at. :wiggle:

Lisa

Thanks Lisa. I lived in Rock Hill which was about 15 minutes from Lake Wylie. Fantastic area and only 25 minutes south of Charlotte. We live in Statesville NC and is just as awesome! Sorry about your experience up north, but you are very correct when you say that "the South is where it's at!" Amen!

God Bless you and your family Lisa.

Love your post, Lisa! Kentucky is actually considered "Upper South", but I could envision ourselves moving farther South. Like you, I am educated and hold a professional position. The traditional Southern values of hard work, dedication to God and family, and strong morality, can and should be of value everywhere. It's a shame that we are often viewed in a derogatory light.....it makes me so mad. We are a resilient people...we can hunt and grow a garden and or crops, we can preserve our food, service our vehicles and are generally more self-sufficient. Who wouldn't desire that kind of life? Parents in the South still teach their children manners, respect and provide them with knowledge of becoming a successful adult. As Travis mentioned, we head South for most everything--shopping, entertainment, vacations, etc. Since we are in the Upper South, we notice a huge difference in personality even heading North a short distance. It always amazes me how so many (not all) Northerners do not have any actual hobbies other than technology. What a boring life. Down here, we can hunt, fish, hike, garden, have large yards for animals, etc.

P.S. We do have chickens, but we have a nice hutch and run for them out back. Lol. I won't say they've never been in the house, but only as baby chicks in a brooder to protect them from the winter air...! Ha!

I wouldn't have you any other way!
I still think you need to make a trip up here to God's country and see all the light houses!
