I like these type stirrups...

they are a product of the deep South...

They turn up in cavalry camp's..Quite Often...this is my third built like this...

I will clean it up tonight and seal it with some tung oil...

Same program as the handfull of bullet's post...

Do you electrolysis it first before you put the tung on it? You need to get all the rust off or it will keep eating away at. If you do electrolysis put it under a heat lamp to dry out and then put the oil on. Just my suggestions.

Congratulations on your find. I was wanting to know do you have any idea what kind and how old this stirrup is?
