On Friday I drove to church site about an hour and a half from home only to find that it had been heavily hunted by other detectorists. After a couple hours without a single good find,I decided to head towards home. I then remembered that there was a farm field on the way home that was once the location of an 1850's one room schoolhouse. I had to stop hunting the farm fields a couple of weeks ago because most of them are now planted. I had the maps with me that I had researched over the winter so I decided to drive by the area to see about hunting it after the crops were picked this coming fall. The site was located on a gravel road next to an old cemetery which made it fairly easy to locate. I was quite surprised to see that it had not yet been planted, so I drove on down the road to ask permission from the farm owner. It turns out the farmer was also having a bad day because a piece of his planting equipment had been broken down for several days and he wasn't able get that particular field plowed and planted. Though it was late morning, I asked for and got permission to hunt it for the day. The site was bounded on three sides by two roads and the cemetery and once I started hunting, it was quite obvious I was at the right location because of the many pieces of brick and colored glass. After about 4 hours of hunting, the farmer stopped by and parked his tractor next to my car on the side of the road and I thought that was my cue it was time to quit. After showing him the Indian Heads and Wheats along with a few relics he invited me back on Saturday. Although the coins are not in very good shape because of the fertilizer, it was a nice two days of hunting that I feel very fortunate to have had. A bad day that turned into a good couple of days and also an invite to come back in the fall.....Thanks for looking.
