Barber shop was WIDE OPEN one last time before the ground freezes.:clapping:

What an absolutely perfect way for me to end the season...unless I bring along a pick axe...or sledgehammer.:crylol:
Seriously...this time was it....the ground is pretty much frozen now.:stars:

The first hour at this beat up park was slooooowww...but picked a bunch after that.

My first dig of the day came about 1 1/2 hours into the hunt...and it was a 1907 Barber dime from about 8" down. I wanted to end the year with a silver on my last hunt...and that pressure was now gone.

I wandered around for another hour or so and finally got a decent, deep injun' hit. I popped out a nasty...and I repeat nasty injun from about 9". It was so nasty...that I didn't even know for sure it was an injun until I soaked it in oil for a couple of hours. It looks like it mutated in with some cement...and only about 1/4 of it is even visible.

Right about the 3 hour mark of the hunt...I got another nice but iffy silver hit. The cursor never settled anywhere...but did it's dance from top right corner...to top center....then fluttered around somewhere inbetween.:smoke: The depth meter showed only the tiniest of black...and the sound was a nice higher warble which was faint even with my gain on 10....YIPPEE!:bouncy:
About 5 minutes later and from 9" down...out popped a second Barber dime...1905. Okay...it's time to leave now......ummm....NO.:lmfao:

Another hour or so went by before I got another signal...and I mean ANY signal. :cool:It was a freakin' nickle hit...but I was bored so I decided to give it a shot. I dug the plug out and started to clear the hole a little with my Lesche...when I struck greenish glass. I didn't want to cut my hand...so I started to dig around the glass to get it out of the way...but it seemed to be a BIG piece. I kept on digging it out and carefully prying at it until it started to take the shape of a bottle. I then noticed it had embossed writing on it...and I could make out Coca Cola. From that point on...I was very careful...but I thought there would be NO way the bottle would be intact. ...especially since I had "stabbed" at it a few times investigating the size before I realized what it was

When it was all uncoverd and I plucked it out from over 7" down...I was amazed to see it was in absolutely PERFECT condition.:yikes: I then ran the probe in the hole to see where the nickel hit came from...and out popped a buffalo nickle.:) So by absolutely nothing but coincidence and luck...I popped out a beautiful greenish embossed coke bottle...just because it was resting in perfect condition..right above a buffalo nickle....and which those lower sounding hits... I NEVER dig.:clapping: The odds of me finding that coke bottle were probably 10,000,000,000 to ONE. :cheers:The odds of it being undamaged were even greater than that. Somehow it must have gotten run over or something while being nestled in very soft mud...and then was safe from that point on to just slowly sink to the depth I found it at.

At this point there was still about an hour of daylight...so I thought...why quit now? I kept plodding along with a tight grip on the SE. I really had no choice about it...because my hand was frozen in that position. :smoke:

After 30 minutes or so I got a nice high warble hit that was almost too good to be true. It was one of the rare ones that repeated as I circled the hole.:yo: At the parks I hunt...those clear hits disappeared 10 years ago...unless you can get just a little deeper. I dug down 8" and then ran the probe...and like I knew it would this time...it sang silver.
I carefully dug around the pinpointed area and popped out a 3" clod. Peeking out of the clod was a sweet little silver rim.:super: This usually doesn't happen...and I usually just pinch the clod...then the coin comes out. This time however...I could clearly see the sweet silver rim sticking out. I decided to leave it just like that until I got home to take a picture of it.:)
The thrill of not knowing exactly what it was kept me buzzing all the way home. :jump:

I set it on the scanner for the pic...then it was time to pop it open to see what it was. Because of the nice clear lines around the rim...I was expecting a merc...but as you can see...I was pleasantly surprised with a second 1907 Barber dime.:surprised: The cool thing is... that you can clearly see a perfect mirror image of the barber in the mud clod ...from where it was lodged for over 100 years. Pretty cool way to end my hunting season....with the thrill of popping open a clod with a silver rim peeking out.

My take for the day...1 sweet old coke bottle by pure chance...1 nasty injun'...1 1920 Buffalo Nickle...3 Barber dimes...1905...and 2 (1907's)..and as ALWAYS...some peace and solace.

The ground is now pretty much frozen here...so this was officially my last hunt of the year. I hope you all have a nice holiday season...and that "cabin fever" doesn't get the best of us all. :razz:Thanks to all of you for viewing my posts..and for helping me enjoy this wonderful hobby. Take care...and have a Merry Christmas.:beers:

Great story and finds Bryce. What a way to close out the year. I still can't believe you got out today.

That sure is a coincidence to find a whole Coca Cola Bottle in the ground with a Buffalo Nickel with it. What a find within a find! Them Barbers look SWEET!!! I had a bit of luck today going through some Penny Rolls from the bank myself Bryce. Got an Older Canadian Penny, 12 Wheats and something that really shocked me....3 Injuns dated 1892,1905 and 1906. That's right!! These were in Rolls from the bank! Getting $20 more tomorrow to see if there is anything else in those for Injuns. Maybe even a few Dimes and Quarters Rolls also. Congrats on a very successful hunt Bryce. Let's hope Spring comes quick! Back to the research! Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year's Bryce and Good Luck and HH to you in 2009.

Wow! I am surprised you still got a hunt in. I thought you guys got snowed in in IL? or was that ice?

Those are really nice Barbers Bruce and I like the Coke bottle. Interesting how the ground made a stamp from the coin's impression. Like a watermark from the Earth. On that coke bottle find, that brings back memories of reaching in the machine after putting in 25

Bryce, nice last hunt of the season.Three Barbs,Buffalo,IH and a old Coke bottle. At 5 pm here the winds were around 30 knots and the temp 6 degrees F very cold for this time of year.Since your in the planning state for next season any coil or equipment changes. Later Ron

That's like asking Bruce if he's going to try a different lucky shirt.

quit calling me Bruce:crylol:? It's Bryce...not Bruce:detecting:.

As for our weather....yep...it is nasty and cold. We got no snow...but a couple of days ago we got about 1/2" of ice:thumbdown:
I'm glad you have some beach that you can squeeze in some winter hunts. That will at least keep you from having detector withdrawals:thumbup:
Take care Lonnie,...and have a good Christmas my friend,

I'm just a feller' who spent a ton of hours on my SE this year trying to figure out what worked for me. I don't think I know any more than the next person when it comes to detecting....but I did finally put together some settings that worked for me. Take care...and thanks for the kind words. Enjoy the holidays...and above all...be safe.

stroke of pure luck. I know it isn't worth more than a couple of bucks...but the thrill it gave me is one I won't forget.
I hope you find some more injuns in those rolls from the bank.
Good luck in that quest. Have a safe Christmas my friend..and try to ward off the cabin fever until the ground unthaws for us in a few months.

To see what it says on the very bottom of the bottle as there should be the name into the glass of the plant where this bottle originally come from if it is a old one. It also will be a 6 OZ bottle too I believe as that was the ones that were made that are old and later on they were 8 OZ which are the newer ones, then a 10 OZ, 12 OZ and a 16OZ were made, not sure of the dates when they went to the 8 OZ bottles.
I Like your Barber dimes too as they all look in very nice shape which is a big plus on barber coins, many are well worn.

Rick

I live about 75 miles from you as the crow flies here in Indiana and its been 4 below for 2 days now. We had to dig some new fence posts cause a car went thru the fence and we couldn't do it with a posthole digger by hand as the ground was froze more then 6 inches. Had to use the hydraulic one on the tractor. Glad to see you were able to get out and dig some more silver again out of that same park.

by 5:00 that evening...the temp had dropped down to 18 degrees. Saturday was in the 30's and part of Sunday was about 25 degrees...but by last night it was 2 degrees..and down to zero when I woke up this morning:surrender:
A couple of weeks ago Larry-IL posted a pic of him out in a few inches of snow...and frozen ground...and he only lives a couple of hours from me. Here though...it was in the mid 30's and we had only a dusting of snow. My ground here actually didn't freeze until the last 2 days. It would freeze down a couple of inches...but the high temps would thaw it again. Now though...the cold temps have frozen it down for good:thumbdown:
Take care and enjoy the holidays. It looks as though the Indiana weather...and Larry's northern IL weather has finally sucked my little podunk town in:bouncy:

no name on the bottom. There are the numbers 57-20...whatever that means:detecting:
It looks like a bottle from the 40's or 50's to me...and I know it isn't worth much...but it was definately an "will always remember" find"
I think we're froze up here for the winter now. I've been lucky so far because Larry-IL lives less than 3 hours from me and has been frozen for a couple of weeks. My ground didn't freeze all the way down until last night. For the last 2 weeks or so...if I could get past the first 2" with the Lesche...the rest was smooth sailing. Not anymore:biggrin: Take care Rick...and have a safe holiday.

James in hard times people actually turn in old coins they were saving. It happens over, and over when money gets tight. No better time than now for Roll hunting.
Thanks Bryce for understanding my post to James.
