Battery problem-help?

hi just got my xterra and put the battery's in the way the diagram on the control housing shows and the detector doesn't work nothing happens when i go to turn it on, so i put the battery's in opposite to what the diagram shows and it works, my question is has anyone else had this problem, and will it affect the performance of the machine?

everything seems to be working fine but i am starting to think if that's wrong what else is going on in there that maybe wrong or affecting performance?

anyone have any experience with this ? any info would be gratefully accepted.

if the batteries are inserted the way this picture shows then I would say your okay notice how the positive comes out of the bottom by the coil cable. the picture is from the on-line owners manual.

my detector has the same icons on it as pic 2 but if i put the battery's in that way the machine doesn't work i have to put them in the other way around like the right hand side on pic 2 says plus down i have to put mine plus up and and left hand side says plus up i have to put them in plus down.

the machine works but its just not right if that's asre about then what else is wrong it just doesn't make me feel good about the whole set up.

I am not sure because my new x-terra 705 comes Wednesday maybe it will be same yours. Call Minelab and or maybe someone who already owns one will reply and we will both know. Is yours the x-terra 705, if so you can not hurt it putting batteries in wrong way from what I have read it just will not turn on.
New subject; Have you taken it outside in your yard yet if so what is your first impressions?
I will take mine out Thursday because when t comes Wednesday it will be to hot already for me and then I will post some pics of my first hunt and my first impressions. But I will inform you Wednesday how my batteries installed.

This is the only one rational reason that I could see why your detector would work with the batteries installed backwards.

If you look at this picture taken by MT_VertCaver back when he took his detector apart, the white connector for the battery holder over on the left side of the picture shows the the connector is keyed and will probably only push onto the circuit board one way. If you follow the red and black wires heading to the battery holder my guess is that these were soldered on to the battery holder backwards. The person soldered the red wire onto the battery holder where the black are should have gone and the black wire was soldered onto the holder where the red wire was supposed to go.

You have a couple of choices. Either use it the way you are right now and not worry about it, send it back and have them reverse the wires or reverse them yourself if you have the skills to do that.

It may be worthwhile just to have the dealer swap out the entire detector being that you just got it and you may want to make sure that they didn't mess anything else up. More then likely the company that you bought it from would swap out a DOA unit with a new one, no questions asked. Had you stopped at not trying to install the batteries backwards, that it my opinion would be considered a detector received DOA.

I agree that it appears someone in manufacturing got the wires reversed. It might work well with the batteries reversed. But I'd make sure I contacted the dealer AND Minelab to see if they'd rather replace it. JMHO HH Randy

i would get it replaced asap as if you decide to sell it on the next owner will think youve been tinkering with the innerds.

thanks heaps mapper65 that's great info there thanks heaps and Randy i think i will send it back and just put on the note detector does not work please replace? that way i don't have some nagging thing in the back of my head there is something wrong with it.but i have already told the dealer what i know and they hadn't mentioned replacing the unit but to send it to minelab for repair so don't think i am getting a new one from the dealer so will have to send to minelab sometimes it pays to just follow instructions and if it doesn't work send it back. or if i want to save some money just re solder the wires, not sure what to do will have a think about it and see what i come up with but it makes sense now its a simple error so will have a look inside and make a decision latter once i get my head around it and whats the best cause of action for me.

T.A.L.LasVegas mine is a 705 and i am sure yours will be fine good hunting out there and look forward to the pics of the finds

I'd call Minelab and explain the problem. Let them know that you contacted the dealer and he wanted you to send it in for repair instead of replacing it himself. I'd also tell them that, since it was apparently wired incorrectly from the factory, you would prefer to get a whole new unit instead of one that has been repaired. Not sure how Minelab will respond to the problem or the lack of response by your dealer......... But my guess is that Minelab would have preferred the dealer to have stepped to the plate and sent you another unit instead of making you go through this process. Good luck with your situation and let us know how it works out.
