When turning the battery check knob in the on position, I get a continuous hum. Is this the norm or should I get a short hum and then it stops...First time with a CZ.

That is normal. The more battery the louder it is. It gets less loud when the batteries are getting run down. The manuals are available here:Fisher detector manuals
