Be aware! Bitmaps can carry nasty code.....

Photoshop CS2 and CS3 have a loophole allowing nasty code to be able to be placed in a bitmap (.bmp) file and that code can be run on your computer.

Here's the link for the info:

Guess I should change my ZoneAlarm to not accept .bmp files.

Hope no one gets any of that nasty code.

if you see a picture you can right click on it and go to properties...it will tell you - in most cases - it is a jpg or a .gif
file.

If it is a .bmp file...well...you have to concider this...if you are viewing it with Internet Explorer or other browser...it is already in your temporary internet files...you've already downloaded it to your harddrive.

That is why I added .bmp to my firewall so it will not download them to my temp internet files. Some of those small avatars people use are sometimes .bmp files. As the article mentioned - so far - no one seems to have been affected by the problem that Photoshop CS2 and CS3 allow...but...now that the word is out...hackers will try to use it before a fix can be put out for others to use for thier protection.

For now a good firewall is the best protection. ZoneAlarm did not have .bmp in its quarantine listing...I had to manually add it. Maybe it will cut down on some of the ads that are out there but not letting them into my computer...that sure would be nice.
