Beach Detecting.

Dinger day

New member
Hi everyone,I've had a quick look through the archives and can't find too much on this.

I've just recently started using the "Etrac" on the beach and find it very good on dry
sand, but when I get anywhere near wet salty sand the machine is just too noisy!
Even turning the sensitivity down doesn't seem to help much.

I use the Wot coil on the beach only, so if you have lots of experience with the Wot coil
"Etrac" combination,I would be be very interested and genuinely appreciative of any
help and advice you can provide.

Cheers,Dinger.

Might try that. BCOOP may be one guy you want to ask.

Depending on the sand you are hunting in there may be black sand and minerals that reflect a signal back to the coil which is responsible for lots of threshold instability and chatter. You can minimize lots of this by blocking out the 01-05 conductive part of the scale or sometimes more. You will loose some of the small gold rings and platinum as you do. I determine how much to block on my E trac by watching what is happening with the cursor and then try to minimize a Small amount as I can and block out that area.
In some areas my suggested sens will say 2=6 That's right 2 to SIX! IF I run the machine at that I will be stable but the objects I want are deeeepppp 12inches or more. I use a 14inch Excelorator coil or a 10x12 SEF and they help in reducing all the chatter are very sensitive, deep, accurate and do a great job. then I will push the sens in Manuel and try to get it where it will be the highest without to much talking chatter and noise. Over time I found that I can work well at 19 -22 which is way above the suggested 6.

Andy has a whole section on Beach hunting in his book that I started with even before I bought the E trac and I suggest you read it for lots of good tips on the Beach. This forum rocks and will have lots of good info as well, don't forget there is a beach hunting forum on here.

Good luck & let us know what you figure out.

I know... I'm a long way from the beach!

I hunt So Co beaches with my WOT. Here is what I have found. I hunt in -3 most of the time. The E T will still false a lot at times, but if you are very careful with your swing you should be able to run clean. Any slight change in elevation above the sand will cause a false, as will sudden direction changes. So swing low, level, and slow. dry sand does not seem to present a problem, only wet sand and water covered sand. The machine will tell you when you are doing it wrong. Good Luck, Terry in San Diego
