Beach Hunting (any tips?)

Here in St. Louis, we dont have the beaches to search, but I'm planning a trip back to Minneapolis to visit my family and of course I'll bring the explorer...
I just bought myself a sand scoop and I wanted to know if there are any tips or tricks I need to know about beach hunting. I wouldn't think the targets sound different, do they? Is there a better set of settings for beaches compared to dirt? What about water, has anyone had problems submersing the coil a foot or so?

So far no leaks in the coil. I wouldn't take it in the water if you've got an X-1 probe on the rod. And if the waves are really high don't even go in the water because it only takes one good wave to ruin your machine. It really makes a great beach machine, I wish I had a waterproof Explorer. I've hunted a few Lake Michigan beaches that are kept clean by many machines.
Often I have to walk 20 yards to get even a foil signal. Not a bad idea to go to -16 iron mask unless there is too much noise from the iron. But even then you could use ferrous sounds and dig anything that is higher than the lowest tone. Also the big coils are great on the beach. At least use the stock coil. I like the X-12 in the sand. Really covers ground fast.
Can't wait to try my new WOT on the beach.

Thanks. I don't have to worry about waves being that I would be searching lake beaches in the Minneapolis area and the waves never get more than a foot high in the area, if that. Lake Michigan and Lake Superior are another story, I agree with you there. The last time I was at Lake Michigan, the waves were so high I thought I was at the San Francisco bay; which was the closest thing to the ocean that I've ever seen. <img src="/metal/html/cry.gif" border=0 width=40 height=15 alt=":cry"> My dad just moved to Florida, east of Jacksonville. So I'll have to go visit him and see the ocean.

Birch Engineering water proofed an XS, check it out., he doesn't do them for hire so I am told. I have his Hip Mount Kit. Love it. Used one for years on my old Whites untill i got the Exp Xs. Now that I found one for the XS I'm back home again.
 
Be sure not to lift the coil after detecting, water from the shaft will run into the the main electrical box rendering your great detect worthless and without a warranty
 
WOW, I am saddened to hear that. I have seen all of our (U.S.) oceans. I lived at Hampton Beach N.H. for about 2 years. I feel everyone should be able to enjoy the ocean at least once in their life. HH
