BEACH HUNTING WITH E-TRAC

boog

New member
Started hunting with my new e-trac about one month ago---all in parks, lawns...etc...I just returned from a week in Ocean City Md. Talk about a clean beach!!! The first day I was there I hunted for about an hour and found two zincs and a token. I was using the beach mode. I was so desperate for a signal that I went to quick mask all metal mode just to see what Co/Fe #'s are in relation to what I dig up---sort of a learning experience. I was just hunting dry sand at the time. The next day I decided to try the pattern in Andy Sabisch's (De Marco) book--with that and a longer day I collected about three dollars in clad. The next day we had some beach erosion from Igor and that seemed to make a big difference. We found a few coins laying on top of the sand and I found a 14k ring with 5 diamond chips in that came in at a solid 12-04---we were hunting at the low tide line--had a close call with a large wave --too close--will be considering a waterproof machine for the future. What a great way to break in a new machine--dig as much as you can to see the correlation of the numbers( plus the sound) to the target. Had another solid 12-04--got excited--retrieved my first pringles top! My main question is: I am headed to the Outer Banks in October and January and want to cover more area and possibly get a little more depth (although I was nailing quarters at 12"). What coil would the members recommend in the 15" range. I am considering the Coiltek 15" DD WOT coil. Thanks for your help! HH

You might want consider the 15x12 SEF COIL

If I was buying a new large coil I would get the SEF 15x12 but as it is money is tight and I use the 14 inch excellerator coil I have had and love it. It is very stable on high sens and hits the tiny targets too. I have dug some coins at 18 inches with it. But if you can I would try them side by side and tell me and us what you think.

i hunted the obx this summer and didn't do to good with the stock coil. if i had a 15 don't think it woulda helped ..i also believe this is a clean beach. after the storms is a great time.... I would go with the SEF 15x12 for sure. great luck and post some pics next time we wanna see you finds.Mr.K

I've always heard anything bigger than a 12" and you start loosing sensitivity to coin sized targets. I can only imagine how it would reduce gold targets. I have personally experienced this trait in bigger coils. Even the stock 11" doesn't do as well on gold as the smaller concentric coils.

When the big coils started getting popular (wot) i read as much as i could before buying one. The one thing that made my decision as to what size to use was that the larger coils do not equal in depth by there size. So a 10 in coil may get 10 depth but that does not mean a 18 inch will get 18 inch's. After 14 inches the depth gain is lost downward but sweep is gained side to side. So I stuck with the 14 inch. This was prior to the SEF coil and would love to see some graphs on them.

good luck
