Just having fun modifying a Deepstar for a customer that wanted even more depth. With a little additional heatsinking, it reliably runs on 24V, pumping 4A peak through the coil. It would make a great winter detector as the case gets comfortably warm, and kept under the coat will help to ward off the shivers. The coil gets nice and warm too and if you are searching where there is a skin of ice on the water, just sit the coil on it (having pinpointed a signal) and it will melt a neat 12in diameter hole just over the object.
Just realised that aliens are coming to this planet on treasure hunting trips and this is the explanation for the mysterious crop circles that appear in our cornfields this time of year. Their technology enables them to make far more powerful PI detectors than we can, with the result that the eddy currents induced in the ground kills off the roots of the corn and it all falls down flat in a circle. Fortunately though, they haven't figured out how to dig holes 100ft deep.

But could you please include a high power laser for cutting holes, this would be most usefull on beach sand as it would allow removing a target at great depths without the usual sand "cave in" effect. Also the resulting fused silica pottery could be removed and used for flowers around the house.

Hi Eric
What about the poor little worms ?
Greenpeace will fry you ash for this! :)

Eric, Now we know why the weather is all messed up. Your machines are raising the temperature of the oceans! How much extra depth are you getting?
With 64 times the power required to double the range I expect that it is not a whole lot. Does the field take longer to collapse in the coil? Does this effect small gold at 15uS? Dave. * * *

Just another clear example that "Skill and Perseverance will win out over Ignorance and Superstition." Of course this all must be applied liberality and of course you did...
Good work...Frank

Hi Dave,
Should be getting about 10% more range and that does seem to be the case in an air test on some coins. i.e. our 50p coin goes from 20in up to 22in with the 11in coil. The field does take a little longer to collapse, but I can still sample at 15uS. The part that has the greatest heat increase is the coil damping resistor. I have had to go to a 470 ohm 4W type that is bolted to the case. A standard 4W resistor in free air was running at well over 100 deg. C. The most noticeable effect of the greater current is that signals which are faint with the standard power supply become strong with the uprated unit.
Eric.

Hi Russ,
Good idea. Here's another one for future investigation.
Saw a device once that has interesting possibilities for saving those back muscles. It is basically a closed cylinder with small holes drilled all over its surface. Connected to one end of the cylinder are two flexible lines, one carrying high pressure air and the other carrying water under pressure. The air and water issuing simultaneously from the small holes quickly fluidises the sand and the device automatically buries itself. The result on a wet beach was quite dramatic; one moment it was there, the next it had gone. Combine this technology with an inbuilt ferrite probe and a suction lift when a signal has been detected. The gold ends up inside the cylinder and the air and water blows out any residual sand through the holes. This could be the ultimate deck chair treasure hunting. Just sit back next to the diesel driven pumps in the knowledge that this simple device is ferreting around under the sand collecting all the gold. The only problem is that the beach remains fluidised (in other words a quicksand) for several hours afterward and other beach users could similarly disappear.
Eric.

Eric,
How about using water cooling? Collect the boiling water in a special chamber and have the worlds first PI that will make you a nice cup of tea. US versions would of course make coffee. Sounds like a winner to me, Dave. * * *

Hey!
Maybe adding thermal sensors will allow you to
pick up the heat generated in deep targets!

How about a computerized voice that speaks in your own slang like Southern real slow "Hey boy, if a fella was to dig a hole 7" deep and 2 1/2" to the right, toward that willow tree there is a 6 dwt. gold mans diamond ring waiting for you." Or Yankee: "Youse guys should be digging straight down 7" and to the right, gold ring waiting." California: "Dude, there is a finger atachment waiting for you 7" down or so, you know."
This would be a great change in the industry and would come close to getting someone, other than yourself, to dig. Frank
