I've had quite a few short hunts throughout the summer, but the keepers have been pretty slim, and nothing all that exciting. I went out last Friday (yeah, Friday the 13th) to a farmstead just north of my house, but I wasn't holding my breath for anything exciting. I've found several Wheat pennies, a silver Roosevelt dime, and some clad at that spot. The house that was there burned down in 1987, so there is quite a bit of trash. I had what my E-Trac was telling me could be a nickel at about 4". Several of the Wheats were at about that depth, so I was crossing my fingers for a war nickel or Buffalo nickel. I cut my plug, flipped it over, and ran my pinpointer around the loose dirt in the hole. I saw a glint of silver color, and my first thought was that it was a pipe fitting. As soon as I picked it up, I could tell it was a ring. I sprayed a little water on it and cleaned it off, then I looked inside for a marking. I was shocked to see 14 K. This is my first piece of gold, and it is a 14 K white gold men's wedding band. I called the property owner to see if it was his or his brother's, and he said it wasn't. He checked with his mom, and sure enough, it was her late husband's wedding ring. Being a farmer, he didn't wear it while he was working. It happened to be in the house when the house burned down, and it must have dropped out in the yard when they razed the rest of the house. I met with the lady yesterday and returned it. I was really happy to find my first gold, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to return something that is assumed lost forever, especially something with that much sentimental value. Here is a short video and pictures:
