Bent coin question...

Anybody know if a bent coin will throw off the detectors identifying it correctly? Using the F75 I hit a strong 83-84 signal at 6-7”. Confidence meter was full bars and signal strong from four sides, solid quarter. Went down just shy of 8” and up came a bent 1967 Memorial (think taco shell type bend but wide). Ok, go back in with pinpointer and nothing, swing coil over the hole, nada. Coil over the coin, mid dime numbers of 73-74 (not all that odd) but not a lock on like a couple minutes earlier. And yes I swung out around the hole and no other signals. Anybody have same experience?

Yep, all the time. Just this week got a solid penny read and out pops a dime completely bent upon itself. Have had the same results with cut coins, or severely degraded coins. All MD's are made to "see" a round object and relay what it think it is to the meter. Any coin that that been altered will change the read out.

Yes, bent coins will throw off the id. For some reason, some Memorial cents (non bent) will id considerably higher then the average cent on my F 75, also? HH Jim tn

Thx for the responses. Just a new wrinkle in the gray matter!
