I am new to metal detecting, and I am confused on which detector would be the best choice for beach and surf-line hunting. I would like to spend $400-$600. I have been considering the following detectors. Whites Surf Pro PI, Fisher 1280XT, Tesoro Sandshark. If anyone can recomend aonther detector in this price range that would be better, please do. Thanks!

Forget the others! Take your money over to Ebay and get a $1,100 dollar Minelab Excalibur for maybe $500. You'll wish you had one! Trust me!

You should consider how you want to use the machine. Are you going to dive with it or just wade? Are you hunting often or occasionally? How many hours will you hunt at a time? Is weight a concern? Are the beaches where you are going to hunt clean or full of trash like pull-tabs, bottle caps, iron, etc?
Research the differences between pulse, very low frequency and multiple frequency machines.
Ask questions here and make an educated decision.

I dont get to the sand very often. Here in Northern Virginia it's hard to find a place where people even swim in a lake. In order for me to surf hunt I have to spend $1,000 for a weekend at a beach hotel for the twins, Bia and myself. That includes travel and food and stuff.
I don't have a wateproof digital camera either... but I'm working on it!

You and I both have our hands full. Except I'm a full time widowed Dad which might give me an edge you wouldn't want... I think parenting is the hardest job in existence! I vividly remember seeing single parents before I had children and never thought for one second the intensity of the position. I have to give them Kudos.
There are many day's I sit and wonder if I can actually do this. It's very hard!

Ususally Catholic couples have large families. Are you Catholic?
The local beach is 28 miles from my house(Long Island Sound) but the pickin's are worse than Ocean $htty. Lots and lots of scrap in the wet sand and when people loose things in the water it just rolls out to sea because the ocean floor is a hard peat bottom at low tide with no sand cover in a lot of the areas and forget snorkeling or diving because visibility is only 18-24 inches. But it is still fun and I have found some good stuff.

Research the machines that will meet your specific needs and hunting style. Pick one that fits your personality.
Jane and I have been hunting a saltwater beach almost every day for 2 years. She uses a Fisher Impulse (PI) machine and loves it. It is a very tough, simple machine, easy to use. She hunts helter skelter all over the beach: wet and dry sand, and some times knee deep in the water. She moves very quickly covers a lot of ground, and likes to dig lots of targets.
I hunt with a Sovereign Elite (tone ID) and am more methodical (Jane would say "anal"), following a search pattern, and carefully listening to each target before I dig. The Sov (and Excal) take time to learn, and the Sov requires a bit more careful handling than the Impulse. But I like having a pretty good idea of what I have found before I dig. Different strokes for different folks.
Curiously, after a few hours hunting, we both find about the same number of coins and rings. Over the long haul, we both find about the same number of goodies. I am slow, but she digs more trash. And Jane has found digital cameras and cellphones, things that I would consider trash and not dig. But we both enjoy the hunt, the exercise, and the beach at sunrise.
