Best cache detector for Mass. Islands?

MassSaltH2O

New member
Hi! This is Kevin from Ipswich, Massachusetts. Ipswich is on the coast. Most of the coast here is quite rocky, with some sand.
I would like to search for gold and silver caches such as lost treasure. I would be searching on mostly sand/rocky shoreline, some wet sand maybe, but no surf. I am interested in finding caches about four feet down. (or less).
I contacted a major detector dealer to see what kind of machine they recommended. They recommended a couple of Garrett VLF's with a two-box. They also recommended the Pulse Star Pro II.
I've been looking into the Garretts. I have a feeling that I would have to search in the All Metal mode. (In other words, dig it all.)
I have a feeling that the Garrett VLF's are not for me. I think a PI unit might be better. What do you think?
The PI machines all seem to be about the same. They all seem to have about the same depth capability. So I am confused about which one might be best for me. I like the Pulse Star Pro, because it has an iron descrimination meter. I would like a unit that can identify various sensitivities, such as iron, or silver/gold. I'm not looking to dig for any iron "relics", although I know the presence of iron can indicate a chest or something.
So, to make a long story short, what machine do you think I should take a good look at? Another thing I notice about the deepseeking PI's is that the web sites don't have any finds shown. You end up wondering if anyone has ever found anything of value with some of these machines. Thank you very much, sorry for the confusion...

Look at the enclosed link it will help you some. As far as fines and reporting things, most people don't, basically they don't find anything! Good Luck. Don

When you talk about posting finds in cache hunting thats not likely to happen anyway. think about the posts you see for coins or jewelery you see posted,do they have any real money value,no.If you found a chest of gold coins and posted it everybody including your goverment and IRS would be glad to share or take it from you .It is easy to post small finds they are not interested in them as they have more of a sentimental value than a money value. The only time you see a cache find going public is when they have no choice, for an example of that go to WWW.oldcharter.com and see for yourself how many people are involved in that find, which may be the biggest of all time.GOOD HUNTING.

To reply about which is the best unit for your hunting,I would recomend a pulse unit over a 2-box anyday. My feedback on 2-box units has note been very impressive.

You might also like to cosider how difficult it is to dig a hole in wet sand to the depth you are quoting. I often have to give up on targets simply because the sand is falling into the hole faster than i can remove it
