Best overall water detector for jewelry?

Reggie

New member
I came to the nonmanufacturer specific site to find out from you waterhunters WHICH water detector is best for both saltwater and freshwater jewelry hunting. Don't factor-in any usage on land, please. I already have a bunch of land machines, including the best VLF machines. Overall best would factor-in depth, but not totally dependent on depth. I know that PI units go deep or deepest, but have no discrimination. EFFECTIVE results is what I am looking for, as I am in the market to buy. Because I have to drive hours to get to the ocean I need the best I can find for a price I can afford (not more than $2,500, but preferably about $1,000-new or used).

This is a subject often addressed, but I am not finding a concensus. So I don't ask the deakers, but am asking the Users, the successful hunters: which machines do you think is the best, ranking them 1,2, 3? Thanks, everybody. I do appreciate your expertise and experience!

don't think your get a clear winner. but i am buying a new beach machine at the moment, if i wanted disc i would go for a excal, plenty on here like them. but i favour pulse. i would have liked a duel field, but the wife's just ordered new french doors , so i will probably get another whites surf pi pro, old tech, but well proven and reliable. plus i know a dealer who is giving a large discount!. look forward to reading other posts on this subject

Just my opinion, but take a look at Garrett Infinium LS and Goldquest SS. I use both and haven't found anything better! In my area I don't use discrimination much, so a PI Is what I use. Good Luck! Sandmagnet

Reggie, Go with the X CAL 2. I have the CZ-20 and the X cal. You have to turn everything down with the CZ for it to run smoothly in salt water. The X CAL runs great at salt water beaches. I use the CZ for fresh water and the X CAL 2 for salt. Just my 2 cents worth but I am very satisfied with how the X Cal runs at the beach and I have hunted all over the country.

IMHO the Excal is the hands down winner for saltwater and if you want discrimination capabilities...if you can keep it running. Mine's been back two times now. Over a $100 each time. If discrimination is not a MAJOR issue, the Infinium has to be one of the best PIs. The White's products are only waterproof to 25' or they might be a serious contender.
Now for the rumor mill. I did talk with some of those in the know and sometime in the near future, a year or so, a new PI WITH discrimination may hit the market. I can't find out who is doing it but that technological modification is being heavily investigated by the electical engineers.
Maybe a PM to Clive would get an answer that's worth more than all the other opinions here combined.

Troy Galloway has mentioned this in passing-how good it would be for someone to build a PI discriminating machine. His Shadow machines are outstanding, well-made and well-engineered. I would buy any new PI discriminating machine he would come up with. Thanks, Grumpy

Hello Excal owners,
What is your favorite coil size and why?

Kind Regards,

If your looking primarily for jewelry you should forget about discrimination. Whenever you use any kind of discrimination you lower your chances of finding the good stuff. For salt water get yourself a good PI machine and dig everything in the zone. Based on what I've found in the last 2 years you couldn't go wrong with Whites Dual Field. You could follow someone with an Ex Cal and pick up what they miss. Just my opinion.
