I would make an effort to be sure to get a detector that was comfortable, well balanced, simple to use, BUT also efficient at handling all the hunting challenges your wife might encounter. If it doesn't work well, she might have a lot of chatter, poor performance, diminished results and ... well, you know how angry wives can get when they are not satisfied or feel you have been too 'cheap' in your gift-giving.SC Dirt Fisher said:I need a lightweight detector for my wife to use.
My preference is to select a detector that will give me either or both an automated Ground Balance (Ground Grab) or manual Ground Balance that can handle wet salts on coastal beaches. I also favor a more variable Discrimination adjustment rather than a multi-segmented (aka 'Notch') Discrimination so that the rejection can be fine-tuned to handle the site challenges, and this can mean dealing with some wet salt environment or salty water.SC Dirt Fisher said:Needs to be fairly good on the sand beaches and have pinpoint capability. also cost $400 or less.
Hightone said:Again, I would seek the Gamma 6000. It can manual GB to 0. From the Gamma manual:
In most situations, it is preferable to use GROUND GRAB®
to automatically ground balance. Generally, it is best to first let the detector automatically
cancel interference from ground minerals. However, for gold prospecting,
searching on a wet saltwater beach, or searching in an area with so much
metal trash that there is no clean ground for the detector’s internal computer
to sample, we recommended that you manually ground balance.
I have watched 2 like new Gamma's bid out on EBay for less than $300 in the last 3 days.
