My Dad plowed up some new ground for a garden this year and turned up scads of broken pottery, china, stoneware, glass etc. No one I talked to locally could remember any structure ever being there. Naturally I had to investigate with my MXT. The iron that has fooled the disrimination thus far seems to indicate a barn or stable but I think it could also have been a dumpsite from nearby known homesites. Anyway, no silver or gold yet except for this almost real ten dollar gold piece replica. The only thing I've found out about Dodd and Co. Hatters is that they were in business in 1851. I am guessing that the medallion was sewn into or onto a hat. Any theories or additional info from you dedicated relic hunters would be appreciated.

Thanks and Good Huntin

It's a nice find! I found one for sale at www.exonumia.com. Apparently Dodd & Co made their token to look like a gold coin at the time (yours is brass of course) Here's the blurb below. The website is active but the sales page isn't, good ol' Google cache :)

Happy Hunting and start sifting that site, you might find something unbroken and worth some value (bottles, plates, etc)

Thanks for the help. I new someone would come through. Didn't know what exonumia was till today. I'm not done with the site by a long shot. Its all tilled up and fluffy so any sifting won't be to hard. Found a Goodyear hard rubber button last week while looking for arrowheads(its also a six to nine thousand year old Indian campsite).
Thanks again and Good Huntin
