Bible question for all -

steve in so la

Well-known member
The Bible says that when man's blood is shed then the person responsible will have his blood shed by man. Basically, the death penalty.
But why did God not do this to Cain after he killed Abel , the very first killing? The Lord sent him to another land as punishment.
Am I not understanding something here ?
Thanks, steve in so az

Well, I think only God knows the answer to that one, as Cain was a Nomad without a city but I heard on the radio that he built him a city and therefore mocked and angered God! I think this law was started after Cain and Abel and after Seth was born in Abel's place! It was probably after more murders were done and the people had to sentence the murderers to death! I hope somone else has a better answer for you, as I'm not that smart to figure out what God does and He can do anything He pleases! God Bless! Betty

I know God never changes but I've read that in the beginning God didnt want men to eat meat but later did. Also in the beginning God let close relatives merry when there were so few people. Maybe the cain question fall into this allowed then but not later thinking????

...without researching at the moment, and relying on my feeble memory, my answer would be another question. Didn't God give Moses the Law? Now surely man had laws to govern themselves by before the Ten Commandments but maybe an eye for an eye wasn't in effect in the beginning and God had plans for Cains lineage. In other words...I don't know. But...

This will be a great thread to follow as I look forward to an answer to your question also.

Doug

When Cain slew Abel it was the time of human government, simple the time before the giving of the law to Moses. Since there was no written law stating the penalty for murder, God marked Cain to show how sin will affect you and your family. Sin will always be hard to all who are involved in it or those that do it. When the law was given God explained to them the reason behind such punishment as death to those who kill. If we remember God said that righteousness was visited unto the third generation and sin to the tenth generation. That shows the deep effect of sin. Also remember when the children of Israel went out to fight and go beat badly, Moses asked God and someone had sinned. When they found who it was they stoned him, his family and his cattle. That is how much sin effects others. It is like the bird flu, swine flu and the other diseases that rapidly affects man kind. Cain was marked with a curse and so is modern man a curse of sin and it follows you until you repent and turn to God. This is what I understand about the story you are discussing. If any disagrees that is ok, I am not out to offend anyone.

Thanks gunswinger for a good post on this question and you explained it very well and Doug too! That is what I was kinda writing about but didn't explain it as clearly! Moses had too much on his plate, so judges were chosen to help him, if I am not mistaken as Ma goofs a lot! Amen! God Bless! Betty

I agree that it was before the the laws were given to Moses. Please let me clear up one thing in Exodus 20:5 God said "I the Lord thy God am a jealous God visiting the inquities of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me" Exodus 20:6 " and shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments. Bro Ron

If you have your Bibles would you please open them up to Gen 4:4 and read to Gen 4:15. I'm not trying to preach here. I'm just wanting to clarify some scripture. I am no better than anyone else, when it comes to remembering what is written in God's word I sometimes forget things myself. It's not what I or anyone else says, but what does God's word say ? Does anyone have e-Sword it is a free downloadable bible program for your computer. To me it is an invaluable resource with lots of translations and concordances, and dictionarys, etc. www.e-Sword.com

Yet it still shows that sin has an affect on others around you. Three generations that are affected by my sins is a lot. Thanks for the correction I used the right scripture just the wrong way. Sorry for that.

I have eSword on this computer and think it is a great and free tool.

One of the bizarre discussions we had in Bible College was over Gen 4:23-24. Did Lamech slay Cain? Whomever he killed was a stranger and Lamech claimed the curse of Cain for himself....

Hard to say but if God marked Cain so that he could be easily identified and someone did not understand the curse...

No one really knows but it was interesting rabbit trail.

Thanks Ron but I did catch the error and knew it was unto the 3rd and 4th generations, but I was just looking for the answer to Steve's question and; therefore, overlooked what gunswinger wrote! I make mistakes all the time for it is rather difficult to remember with our finite minds so full of things from living on this earth that like a Computer I need mine purged of the old useless stuff and keep the good Word of God! Amen! God Bless! Betty

And would agree with many points of view.
It got me thinking of another point, which you said in your second sentence Steve ..."the Death Penalty". I read An Innocent Man by John Grisham and after reading that and thinking what Jesus taught, I have changed my mind on the Death Penalty. I used to think that it was only right to put someone to death when they murdered others (or in some cases, just accused). I have rethought that position so that I dont believe it is right for us to kill someone who did that themselves. I would like to see those people to do hard labor, so that they pay for their crimes in some manner without the gravity of judgement of a life.

What do you all think? For me, it came as a moment of personal "enlightenment", but I know that many people would totally disagree with me.

Well, J, there are pros and cons on that very subject! I think if a person is absolutely beyond a doubt found guilty of murder, especially serial killers and horrendous murders, then they should be put to death to prevent them from doing it again and causing more deaths of the innocent! After all, these victims might have not been saved but could have been or were saved but didn't have the complete chance to fulfill God's plan for them! But on the other hand, many that were accused and sentenced guilty have lived long enough for better ways of testing whether they did the murder or not to find them not quilty after years spent in prison which has ruined some lives that could never be like they were before imprisoned!

I think there should be swift trials and not wait for 10 to 15 years, more or less, to bring a person to trial! This is just too long and many of the judges now are too liberal and the justice system has been turned upside down along with this topsy-turvy sinful world! God Bless! Betty

the lord moves in myterious ways----------sure he had a reason for this ,but who knows why?i am sure he saw how cain would die at a certain time and place and was satisfied with that?as far as blood for blood ,i am sure he is speaking for the "courts of men" as they bring punishment -----man against man for their crimes.

It would be a greater punishment to live forever in a prison - than getting the suffering over in an instant. However, some people like prison life - I meet them occasionally at the Mission . Steve
