Big Caps, Quarters and -8

I just dug a big bottle top - like the top of a Snapple bottle - that read 42-44. About 5" - 6" down. Then I put a quarter in the open hole and would get nothing in search pattern 1.
Switched to AM and got a -8. Switched to Prospect and got a good strong signal.
Put the quarter on top of the ground and got the standard 42.

I WAS getting a bunch of -8's in the area, and a -8 within 6 inches of the quarter.

Why did I get a good hit on the snapple cap and nothing on the quarter?

GB was 27, sens - 24.

You stated at that you recovered the larger Snapple type cap:

This demonstrates that YOU created a difference, and also that the X-Terra 70 did what it was designed to do .... Detect Metal, however, ....

 
Remember, you ground balanced(like setting a disc level) to a flat surface that exhibits a certain behavior. A hole or a bump may shift that disc level, therefore the target ID shifts. So the hole may be causing the cap to shift into an accepted disc range, and the quarter to shift out of it. A snapple type cap may contain steel and aluminum, so it's a complex target that's big and round. The cap has two chances of being ID'd good, the quarter only one.

sounding target too soon with these newer detectors. The new batch of machines are giving some great performance in iron.. So..when you get that first plug outa the ground and only find a nail or two, DON'T QUIT! get in there and take out some more dirt even if it means widening the hole. :biggrin:

Ah. Thanks guys. Didn't know motopn detectors don't like voids.

I would have kept digging but a dog and darkness chased me away. It was is a public park that closes 1/2 hour after sunset. I left before the Sunset Police showed up.
 
you have enlightened me a touch as well ... I when i hunt in AM I notice lots of small iron,its just amazing how much small crap is down there,this one spot i hunt every target has iron in with the coins .....it is so frustrating ....but I kinda like it because of the challenge,
