Big old silver religious jewelry or war metal?

Found this while hunting an old church site. The area has been inhabited since the mid 1800's. Tested it and it's solid silver with no markings. Any ideas what it is?

Created in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte, the Legion of Honor is the highest award given
by the French Republic for outstanding service to France. In 2004, the government of France decided to extend eligibility for the Legion of Honor to American veterans of World War II who served in France, in recognition of their sacrifices in helping free France from the Germans.
Previously, the medal was issued only to American veterans of World War I.

Thanks for the great info! Is there something missing from the middle or was it just designed differently from what's in the other photos?

Search the area where you found it one more time and you may find the missing coin from the center. That would probably help identify the era of the medal. The minerals in the soil dissolved the adhesive.

I thought about that after I had walked about 50 foot and then went back and dug around in there looking for a stone (wasn't sure what I was looking for). I'm sure I rechecked the hole but now I gotta go back and do some more diggin to double check =)

Lots of family put the medals of veterans on the gravesite of the veteran. You arn't near a cemetary or burial site?

The site was a little church right in the middle of town, no grave sites around. I'm sure cemetaries would be a productive place but there are so many other places to go I don't mess with them out of respect and fear I'll get cursed
