big scary coil headed my way

ok after a bunch of debate with myself i ordered the 12x15 sef yesterday.

I really didn't want the extra weight but down here were i am is considered a flood plain. many rivers come down and spill into Galveston and trinity bay along with many creeks. so most yards are filled in with fill dirt.
some yards can have as much as 2' of fill. most don't have that much but do have 4"- 8". so i really needed the depth the coil can give me.
what i have been doing to get to the old coins all these years is to hit construction sites and parking lot remodels. i watch and see if they scrape the place and if they do ill hunt it before they bring in the new stable fill dirt. but this is slow cause there isn't always construction going in the towns around me. now that the economy has slowed down there is even less going on.

So in comes the 12"x15" sef coil. i think it will give me just enough depth to hit down were i need to get.
once i get it and i have some testing in and several hunts behind it i will post what i truly feel about it.
I'm not a little guy and I'm 34 so i feel that i can handle the weight but i will report about it as well.

Looking forward to your report as I have been thinking about the same coil.I have the 15" WOT and would love to compare the two coils,Ray.

i spend hours thinking about what to buy so i hope i made the rite choice.
i think Bryce's report on the smaller sef really tipped the balance on which coil i would i get.
I'm not in minerals here and i do have some places that are clean but the coins are so deep that the pro coil is just nicking them down in the 10" - 12" area.
I'm not even talking really old coins that are that deep. 1930 era coins being that deep and i know these places were active farther back into the 1880's so i needed to get just about 2 maybe 3" inches deeper.
so we will see if i can get there.

I've seen it in action hitting a colonial shoe buckle at over 15" - pro coil over the item in the hole never made a sound....
I bought one the following week. Easy to pinpoint and quite stable.
It is heavy though - swingy thingy type harness makes sense IMHO.

I used it last year on my SE. It worked great but I had trouble swinging it for more than about 2 hours at a time. It is real heavy.

Here's an article I wrote and donated to Nick_A's Ohio Metal Detecting Magazine about my experience with the 15x12. Hope it whets your appetitie:

Review of the 15

The following keepers were found with my 15x12 after I hunted that park in the article hard several times with my stock Pro coil.

(I didn't take pics of all the Wheats.)

except for more coverage the depths from the reports on joan allens website is that the 12x10 gets the same depth than the 12x15 and .5 deper then the 12x18.dont shoot the messanger check the field reports on the website,i dont think there is much difference in the coinage over in england.silver, copper!

I've been have the same debate wether to buy this coil or not, commited late last week. I'm looking forward to seeing what this thing can do.

Cheers
Greg

Just ordered mine tonight as well. Got an opportunity to try one for a few hours this weekend (thanks again Moseng!). I hit an area that I've hunted before using the 11" and found my first Buffalo nickel and a wheat cent within 30-minutes of using the coil. At first blush, I think its the coverage and excellent separation are what make this a good coil. Its almost impossible not overlap your swings each time.

though they both get good depth I prefer the SEF primarily because it pinpoints to the center of the coil with the Etrac and the WOT doesn't. Maybe it's just a problem with my WOT that I don't know about but when you are going for deep targets the last thing you need is to not be precise. I can use the pinpointing off the front or back of the WOT but it is not precise on deeper targets for me. Mike

I got the 15x12 SEF last summer. Like everyone else, I really love it. What amazes me most about the 15x12 SEF is the separation this coils gives. I have no problems isolating the good signals with this baby!. I have been using it in trashy, "hunted out" city parks and have scored silver 3 out of 4 trips.
I would consider getting a swing thing to help with the weight if it is a concern. I have a swingy thing, but find that I seldom use it.

you should try the one i just got, only been out once so far
