Big Silver - 1951 Franklin

I tried the place I hit yesterday where I got the 1916 Merc and I almost did not dig it! It was a sweet sound 0-28. I thought let me check if it's a can and lifted it 5-6" more and it is still sounded off loud and strong. I figured it's a can but it was "too sweet" so I dug it and about 6-7" I see the beetch giving me her eye with the silver rim and I start getting all excited. I flip it out and it's a beauty. :beers:

COme up here to RI. This is my 5th one of the half dollar series. A 58 before that, a couple Kennedy's and a Walking Liberty.

Congrats on the Franklin Half! For some reason they are hard to find at least for me since I have only 1 to my credit as Actual Finds goes. Bet you will be back there real soon no doubt and maybe you will find more nice surprises on your next visit. Continued Success, Good Luck and HH to you.:detecting:

Ur right! L be there tomorrow hitting the other side! :beers:

Almost forgot to post my very last find & signal at this site. I found a broken utensil and it said, "July 2, 1900"

I love big silver. Anytime you have the situation we are having now with silver being priced high more people collect and collectors tend to sell off their cull coins for melt down. A lot of coins gets taken out of circulation. That tends to increase the value of our older found coin collections over the years. So dont be so eager to sell off those large silver pieces. They may do better than the stock market. There isnt a lot of silver coins being made anymore so the ones we find are really staring to have value. Great half...

Nice find! I have been detecting for about 10 years and have only found one Franklin half. I've found maybe 10-15 Barber and Walking Liberty halves and a couple of Kennedys (all clad - a couple 40% silver). I think the guys who were into detecting early on found most of the shallow half dollars (like Franklins). Either that, or they didn't circulate too much (although a child in the 60s, I remember getting Franklins in circulation). Anyway - congrats and happy hunting!

Beautiful period engraving - I wonder what the date represented.....can you estimate how big the utensil was originally? I can't tell from your pic. Very nice find!

By the way it snapped off and it's really thin at that point I would deduce it was a relatively short utensil, maybe 5" long tops.
