Local Detector Club Teams With Morristown Nuggetshooter To Aid Hurricane
Victims and the Tucson Community Food Bank.
Tucson, Arizona .
For nearly a decade, a small group of metal detector enthusiasts have held
their monthly meetings, raffling lots of prizes, showing member finds and
having speakers of interest. They named the club Detectors
Unlimited because of the various items which are found.
Some members hunt for coins, jewelry, gold nuggets, meteorites, relics and
military artifacts, basically anything containing metal that makes
their detectors beep. Five years ago, the club started holding an annual
planted-coin hunt, open to anyone with a metal detector. A small entry
fee is required. Many nice silver and older American coins are "planted" for
detecting or given away at the event. This year, the Annual Big Silver
Planted Coin Hunt is scheduled for October 1, 2005, at Freedom Park, 5000 E 29th
St, Tucson, Arizona, at 8:00A.M. While this event was in the final stages
of planning, along came hurricane Katrina and the devastation that
followed.
Bill Southern, a metal detector and accessory dealer from Morristown,
Arizona, who owns and operates the country's foremost internet web site
containing forums on metal detecting, decided to help out hurricane
Katrina victims in his own way. Bill started by offering to raffle a gold nugget
he found, with the proceeds of the ticket sales to be given to
the Salvation Army. Well, that was just the beginning of a landslide of
donated items to raffle. In an incredible show of support, offers from
many forum members came pouring in. The prize list so far contains at least a
dozen gold nuggets and gold ore specimens, a one-ounce gold bar, a half-ounce
platinum proof bullion coin , old American silver dollars, silver bullion
coins and a silver bar, an Arizona Mining claim, gift certificates and
assorted meteorite specimens. As the raffle sales approach the $6000.00
dollar mark, all Bill could say was, "I knew many of the people on my
forum were generous, caring, good-hearted folks, but it's unbelievable just how
much they wanted to help out."
Bill contacted Detectors Unlimited and asked if he could hold his raffle
at their Big Silver hunt, where there will be a group to witness the results,
and the club jumped at the chance to help. Detectors Unlimited has even
pledged a sizable purchase towards his raffle. The raffle will be held at
2:30P.M., right after the coin hunt. Tickets for the raffle will be sold
at the hunt and cost $10.00.
In light of recent events members of the Detectors Unlimited Club saw news
articles about the depleted food supplies at the Community Food Bank in
Tucson. Members donated six nice old American coins for a raffle to help
them out as well. Tickets will be for sale at the hunt for $1.00 each or
one nonperishable food item. There will be six individual prizes for this one
raffle Morgan Silver Dollar, Walking Liberty Half Dollar, Silver
Washington Quarter, Mercury Dime, Buffalo Nickel and an Indian Head Penny.
All proceeds from this raffle will be given to The Community Food Bank.
