Bigger Coil for Deeper Searches

Hello! First post here but I've been reading a lot! I want to get a metal detector that does deep searches and also searches coins, jewelry and such. I've thought about getting a 2-box but you can't do regular searches with those. So, I'd like to get the e-trac for regular searches and was thinking about getting a bigger coil so it does a deeper search. Would the bigger coil be good for searches for caches a couple feet deep or so?

What are your thoughts?

hi there and welcome to the forum amanda...i have read your post a couple of times through and there are many questions, at the same time i am wondering about what type of conditions you have...eg...mineralised soil, contaminants etc..i would feel that a machine with discrimination possibilities(e-trac) and a resonably small coil ,and just start out with the pre installed programes..and graduate from there..it is always best to learn how to walk before it is possible to run..i feel confident about the quality of both the information and people found on this forum will no doubt be of valuable assistance as you ill find out in time..maybe joining a club could help..

Hi Wizard and thank-you for your reply! I live in MA and the soil doesn't seem to mineralized. I don't want to go to a big coil right away, just would like to know if I have the option down the road when after I've figured this out a bit more. From what I've read, it seems that the e-trac is the nicest one to use.

the e-trac is my choice of detector with the 8 inch coil ... i live in northern norway where the soil is high mineralised ..i generally detect parks and old camping areas, and these areas tends to be contaminated with all things metal..i also have a large coil 15x12 sef which i do not use..too heavy and too much mineralisation and contaminants..i run a slightly modified coins programme and thats about that..i think that it is important for you to correctly identify the type of detecting you wish to do coin, relics etc..as this can help determine the type of equip needed..join a club and maybe try some different detectors......

Hello, you go you please find the programme EtracEm-V1 en which one on Minelab.com under Etrac install .Es also gives different Coins zip. Which one does learn then the tones very differently are? Summer is if then kannst in nature

Hello Amanda, just a few questions. Have you done any metal detecting? If so what machines have / are you using. The reason I ask is the ET is a bit pricey if this is going to be your first machine. And it can take some time to learn it before you can benefit from it's full potential. But on the other hand you might as well get the best. I'm still going through the learning curve on the ET and with the ground being frozen here in MA I'm not doing any hunting. Looking forward to spring and relearning everything I'll forget this winter. What part of Ma are you from. There might be a local club with other ET users that could help you out.

The etrac is a great machine, takes time to learn if you haven't had anything similar but the "...caches a couple feet deep or so" is out of the question, for that you will need a good pulse detector.
